SAGE talk will mark Allentown's 250th birthday and campus centennial

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Senior Adults Gaining Enrichment (SAGE), an outreach program of Penn State Lehigh Valley, will welcome Frank Whelan of the Lehigh County Historical Society to discuss the history of Allentown on April 13. The event also will include a birthday cake and special gifts to mark the occasion of Penn State Lehigh Valley's centennial. The SAGE session begins with coffee at 10:30 a.m., the featured speaker at 11 a.m., and lunch at noon. The lecture takes place in room 135 at Penn State Lehigh Valley, 2809 Saucon Valley Road, Center Valley, Pa.

Frank Whelan will present "Mr. Allen's Little Town at 250," a look at the founding and growth of Allentown, Pa. Whelan was the historian in residence at the Lehigh County Historical Society from 2006-09. He recently completed a history of the county for its bicentennial celebration in 2012. He wrote more than 2,000 articles and five books during his time as a history feature writer for The Morning Call from 1981-2006. Whelan received his master's degree in history from the University of Missouri, and a bachelor's degree from Blackburn College.
