Softball home Thursday against top team in USCAA

The Penn State New Kensington softball team returns home at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 5, with a nonconference doubleheader against Carlow University at Wolf Pack Park in Lower Burrell, Pa. The New Kensington Lady Lions are coming off a sweep March 31 of Penn State Worthington Scranton in a Penn State University Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Sophomore pitcher Tarra Oravek (Kiski Area High School), 2-1 on the year, scattered three hits with 10 strikeouts in picking up both wins, 9-1 and 13-0. Her efforts earned "Player of the Week" honors from the United States Collegiate Athletics Association.

Coach Mike Marsili’s squad is 2-0 in the PSUAC and 4-5 overall. Carlow sits atop the USCAA national Coaches' Poll. The Celtics are 21-6 overall and 7-1 in the American Mideast Conference.Carlow is led by junior centerfielder Samantha Kemock, who is batting .376 and leads the team with five home runs and 24 RBI. The Lady Lions travel to McKeesport, Pa., on Wednesday, April 11, for a 2 p.m. conference doubleheader at Penn State Greater Allegheny. The home game against Community College of Beaver County (CCBC), originally scheduled for April 7, was canceled when CCBC canceled its season.
