Top Penn State students compete for Scholastic Excellence Award

UNIONTOWN, Pa. -- Three of Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus’ top students presented academic research papers at a special presentation on Tuesday, April 17. Rebecca Corvin, Rachael Franks, and Shirley Rojas Acosta are competing to win the campus’ top Scholastic Excellence Award. All three students will receive monetary awards for their work.

Business major Corvin, of Connellsville, Pa., presented “The Application of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in Today’s Business”; Uniontown resident Franks, a human development and family studies major, discussed the “Increase of Activities on Visually Impaired Information”; and liberal arts major Rojas Acosta, of Lemont Furnace, Pa., shared her thoughts on the “Correlation between Optimism and Physical Exercise.”

The Scholastic Excellence Award winner will be determined by a combination of scores from the oral presentations and scores from the students’ 10-page papers.

To be eligible for the award, students must have at least 30 credit hours at Penn State Fayette within the past four academic years, hold a cumulative GPA of at least 3.67, and have not previously received the award. The winner will be announced at the annual Student Awards Banquet on Friday, April 27.

The panel judging the presentations includes Russell Filburn, senior instructor of communication arts and sciences; Germaine Fotta, senior instructor of computer science; Jes Hutson, instructor if kinesiology; Lindsey Jones, assistant professor of English; and Joshua Marvit, instructor of biology.
