Lions return to NCAA tournament

May 07, 2012

Last year, Penn State Harrisburg’s golf squad became the first team in campus history to earn an NCAA Division III championship tournament berth when it won the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championship. On April 21 and 22, the Lions shot a combined two-day total of 650 at the NEAC tournament in Pennsauken, N.J., to win the league title again and earn its second straight NCAA tournament bid.

The Lions held an eight-shot advantage over conference rival and second place Rutgers-Camden to successfully defend their conference crown and clinch the school’s second NCAA berth. The team now will head to the NCAA Division III Championships, May 15-18 at the Mission Inn Resort & Club, near Orlando, Fla.

With a combined tournament score of 150 and the NEAC individual championship title, freshman Matt Plummer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) received the conference’s Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors.

With his team winning its second-straight league title and four of his golfers earning all-conference honors, Penn State Harrisburg’s Head Coach Brad Kane was named NEAC Coach of the Year for the second straight season, as voted by his peers.
