Worthington Scranton creates music technology classroom

An increase in enrollments in general music courses at Penn State Worthington Scranton over the past few years, coupled with the growth of the campus’ Chorale and Jazz and Concert bands, created a need for a music and technology teaching and rehearsal room.

However, due to regular semester space requirements, the room also had to continue to serve as a standard classroom in support of all subject areas.

The task for devising such a space fell to the campus’ Information Technology Services department.

The result was a multi-functional music and technology classroom, that is regularly used by the campus’ musical performing groups; as a classroom for a new and music technology course, in which music instruction is combined with computer programming classes; as well as a general classroom space that is used on a daily basis by a number of faculty from different disciplines.

This past month, Ryan Moskalczak, information technology specialist, and Griff Lewis, instructional designer, of Worthington Scranton’s ITS department, presented this project at the TechPros 2012 Conference, held at Penn State’s Berks Campus.

The TechPros conference is dedicated to front line and backroom technical employees at Penn State’s campuses and aims to improve and create development and networking opportunities for campus information technology professionals.

It serves as a platform to share solutions and showcase best practices so that all Penn State campuses can benefit and improve information technology services across the University.
