Farmers Market in Hershey launches its third season

The Farmers Market in Hershey, a wellness-themed market affiliated with Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, will open for its third season from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, in the grass field between the Cocoa Beanery and the Englewood barn, off Bullfrog Valley Road in Hershey. The market offers a diverse array of locally grown, ecologically responsible products including: fruits and organic vegetables, dairy items (yogurt, eggs, raw milk, and aged cheeses), grass-fed meats and pastured poultry, artisan whole grain breads and baked goods, locally made wine, and other specialty items such as herbs and spices, canned/preserved goods, flowers, cider, granola, local honey and gluten-free products. It also features unique community wellness programming that includes free health screenings, chef demos, recipe cards, and appearances by other local health experts. Last year, the market was named one of the nation’s Top 20 Favorite Farmers Markets in the America’s Favorite Farmer’s Markets Contest held by the American Farmland Trust.

The Farmers Market in Hershey Summer Concert Series will launch with a performance by Shea Quinn of The Luv Gods. Each week, thanks to funding from the Hershey Center for Applied Research, local professional musicians will be featured from 6 to 8 p.m. on the patio next to the market, free to the public. Additionally, Guido Schiavoni of Edible Art will feature a table display and demo with carved fruits and soaps and local artist Sue Myers will be showing hand-painted porcelain as well as original watercolors and oil paintings of birds and animals in their native habitats. The market will also be launching season-long children’s programming, and is currently beginning construction on a teaching garden for local youth that will be located within the market. There will also be an appearance by Coco, the mascot for the Hershey Bears.

The market distinguishes itself with its unique Community Wellness programming. Each week, nursing and medical trainees and professional staff from Penn State Hershey Medical Center offer free health screenings as well as targeted preventive health education. The market also provides free weekly booths for community groups that promote integrative health. On opening day, the American Cancer Society will be promoting the Hershey-Hummelstown Relay for Life (to be held on June 8-9).

The market is conveniently located just west of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center campus, between the Englewood Barn and the Cocoa Beanery at 1215 Research Blvd., Hummelstown, Pa., off of Bullfrog Valley Road. Customers may park in the parking lot for the Hershey Center for Applied Research, located next to the market.
