Penn State faculty and staff giving exceeds past total, current goal

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Thanks to landmark gifts in support of the University Libraries and the Palmer Museum of Art, campaign commitments from present and former Penn State employees during For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students now total more than $43 million. That figure now exceeds the entire sum raised from faculty and staff during the Grand Destiny campaign, which concluded in 2003, and beyond the $43 million target that the For the Future campaign aimed to reach by 2014. The goal-breaking commitment came from Librarian Emeritus and alumna Sally W. Kalin and her husband, State College, Pa., attorney Richard L. Kalin.

Sally Kalin, who retired as associate dean for University Park Libraries in 2011 after more than three decades of service to Penn State, is the honorary co-chair of the Libraries Faculty Staff Campaign. She said, “I’m pleased that our gift could help Penn State to reach this important milestone, but the real story is the thousands of gifts that came before ours and that will, I hope, come after. They reflect the commitment of the University’s faculty and staff to making Penn State a better and more student-centered institution.” 

According to Kalin, the philanthropy of Penn State faculty and staff is guided by their unique perspectives on the institution. She said, “Most alumni have spent just four years here, but there are many employees who give 30 years or more of their life to the University. When you work within an organization every day, you come to understand where and how your support can have the greatest impact, so the gifts that come from faculty and staff are deeply meaningful.”

To date, almost 11,500 Penn State employees have made gifts to the For the Future campaign, which is focused on six key objectives: ensuring student access and opportunity, enhancing honors education, enriching the student experience, building faculty strength and capacity, fostering discovery and creativity, and sustaining the University’s tradition of quality. The campaign’s top priority is keeping a Penn State degree affordable for students and families. The For the Future campaign is the most ambitious effort of its kind in Penn State’s history, with the goal of securing $2 billion by 2014.

Kirsch, senior vice president for development and alumni relations. “Faculty and staff giving sets a powerful example for Penn State’s supporters. When those who know the University best are willing to invest in its future, it inspires confidence in our alumni and friends. Although we’ve achieved the goal of the Faculty and Staff Campaign, we will continue to rely upon Penn State’s employees to challenge Penn Staters everywhere to make their own commitment to our students and our institution.”
