Harrisburg chancellor speaks at international colloquium

Chancellor Mukund S. Kulkarni joined educators from around the world to present “Applied Research: Connecting Education and Industry,” at the Hochschule Darmstadt – University of Applied Sciences International Colloquium, June 14, in Darmstadt, Germany.

Since 2008, Penn State Harrisburg, Penn State Erie, and Purdue University have participated in an international education partnership with universities in Ireland and Germany, including the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt. Through this exchange program, Penn State Harrisburg electrical engineering technology students have studied at Darmstadt, and faculty have been guest lecturers.

During his presentation, Kulkarni highlighted several Penn State Harrisburg centers, including the Center for Signal Integrity, the Central Pennsylvania Laboratory for Biofuels, and the Capital Area Institute for Mathematics and Science (CAIMS), which have developed in response to the college’s close work with local industry.

With more than 25 electrical connector companies in the Harrisburg metropolitan area, central Pennsylvania has become known as the “connector capital of the world.” The Center for Signal Integrity focuses on the development of new applications with the goal of helping the industry remain globally competitive.

The biofuels center, the only one of its kind in the region, provides a state-of-the-art research and teaching facility that serves as a center for the study of alternative energy sources.

CAIMS works to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science through the use of research-based materials and practices and by emphasizing long-term professional development of those directly involved in the education of children and youth.
