Penn State offers new student insurance plan

Penn State students are eligible to purchase a new student health insurance plan for the upcoming 2012-13 academic year. All undergraduate students taking three or more credits or graduate students taking one or more credits are eligible to purchase the plan. The new plan, offered through Aetna Student Health Insurance, provides significant improvements for students seeking coverage.

“The Aetna Student Health Insurance plan provides solid coverage for Penn State students currently without health insurance,” said Karen Kline, student health insurance manager for University Health Services (UHS). "The new plan meets all ACA (Affordable Care Act) requirements that are expected to take effect in 2014." The Student Health Insurance Plan includes discount vision and optional dental programs. These programs provide savings on expenses such as lenses, frames, and LASIK, cleanings, crowns and orthodontia.

For students at Penn State’s University Park campus, prescriptions are covered at 100 percent when filled through the UHS Pharmacy. Preventative services are covered at 100 percent with no deductible when students choose UHS for their healthcare. The plan also provides access to the Devon Health network (including Geisinger Health System) at the University Park and DuBois campuses and the Aetna network of physicians nationwide.

Penn State requires health insurance for international students and their dependents; the Aetna plan is open to international students to fulfill this requirement. Graduate assistants and graduate fellows (and dependents) are eligible for the Penn State Graduate Assistant and Graduate Fellow Health Insurance Plan through Aetna. Graduate Assistants and Graduate Fellows Insurance includes vision and dental coverage.

Coverage can be purchased for the full academic year (which includes summer) or for fall or spring semester. The deadline for fall enrollment is Sept. 11. In an effort to create a more efficient and earth-friendly process, enrollment and referrals are completed electronically through the Aetna website. The plan details are also available online, rather than in printed form.

Additional information about the student health insurance plan can be found on the UHS website at http://studentaffairs.psu.edu/health/services/insurance.
