UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State College of Engineering has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) in Spain that will pave the way for future educational and research collaborations between the two schools.

The effort was spearheaded by Maria Lopez de Murphy, an associate professor of civil engineering at Penn State, during her sabbatical at the university last fall.

The UPM is considered Spain's top technical university. According to Lopez, the university has more than 40 researchers dedicated to the science and technology of building materials, making it one of the largest such research groups in Europe.

Lopez said she envisions collaborations between Penn State and the UPM in research areas such as materials, sustainable infrastructure and engineering education.
