College names coordinator of Intensive English Communication Program

Heidi E. Vellenga was appointed as coordinator of the Intensive English Communication Program (IECP) and Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics in Penn State's College of the Liberal Arts on July 1. Her primary duties will include curriculum development, teacher and staff supervision, and strategic planning for the IECP. Housed in the Department of Applied Linguistics, the IECP offers full-time intensive academic English courses to international students and is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation.

Vellenga most recently served as the assistant director of the Intensive English Program at Indiana University, Bloomington, and has language program administration experience at Saginaw Valley State University (MI) and Daegu University (South Korea), in addition to ESL, undergraduate and graduate teaching experience.

Vellenga received her doctorate in applied linguistics from Northern Arizona University. She holds a master's degree in TESOL & Applied Linguistics from Indiana University and bachelor's degrees in French and English from Calvin College. Her research interests include instructional effectiveness, teacher development, language program administration and instructed interlanguage pragmatics. She is an active member of AAAL (American Association of Applied Linguistics), TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and NAFSA (Association of International Educators). Her recent publications on instructed second language acquisition and professional development appear in System and TESL-EJ.
