Wijekumar will deliver professional workshop for school counselors

Kay Wijekumar, associate professor of information sciences and technology (IST) at Penn State Beaver, will deliver a professional development presentation for the campus’ annual School Counselors Workshop and Luncheon, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 28 on campus. Her topic is “Caught in the Storm: Navigating the Internet Storm.” Counselors from more than forty schools in Beaver’s service area are invited to attend the event.

Wijekumar and researchers from Penn State’s College of Education have received more than $30 million in grants from public and private sources to design the Intelligent Tutor System, a unique computer program that helps children learn to read by teaching them to focus on text organization.

Last year Wijekumar co-authored an article, ‘Web-Based Tutoring of the Structure Strategy With or Without Elaborated Feedback or Choice for Fifth and Seventh-Grade Readers,’ in the Reading Research Quarterly. She also traveled to Italy with students from her Senior Synthesis Class which presented its iPhone and Droid Application Development and Prototype at the International Conference on Computer Applications in Venice.

This past March Wijekumar traveled with students to Germany where the students gave a presentation at the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS) Conference, 2012 Information Systems. The students’ presentation was delivered as part of Wijekumar’s capstone course, Information Sciences and Technology Integration and Problem Solving.
