Penn State CAPS creates group for male survivors of abuse

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at Penn State is offering a new group this fall for male students who have had unwanted, abusive or confusing sexual experiences at some point in their lives, which may still be affecting them. Research shows that healing from sexual manipulation or abuse is facilitated by speaking about what happened and connecting with others who have had similar experiences in a supportive environment.

CAPS invites male students who have had such experiences to join with the Male Survivors group. By providing a safe space where men can experience support and validation, the group sessions will help men learn that the abuse they experienced was not their fault, dispel whatever shame they may feel, build healthy coping strategies, and begin to see themselves as resilient and whole.

Students who are interested should contact CAPS staff psychologist Andrea Falzone for more information at 814-863-0395 or anf3@psu.edu. Prospective group members’ confidentiality and privacy will be maintained.
