Penn State Behrend choirs plan two holiday concerts

November 13, 2012

“My Dancing Day,” the Penn State Behrend Concert Choir and Chamber Singers’ holiday concert, will be performed at 2 p.m. Dec. 2 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 in the Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

“Dancing is our stream-of-consciousness theme,” said Gabrielle Dietrich, choir conductor and director of choral programs at the college. “It’s is woven through the repertoire in different ways. Sometimes it’s stated plainly, such as in an arrangement of the traditional English carol ‘Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day.’ Sometimes dancing is reflected in the rhythms or in the emotional interaction of a piece. The concert definitely has a holiday feel, and hopefully the musical portrayals and verbal descriptions of dance add a very festive air to the overall experience.”

Other pieces to be performed by members of the 38-voice choirs include Oscar Galián’s “Salseo,” Abbie Betinis’ “Hail, Christmas Day” and “In the Bleak Midwinter,” Frederick Loewe’s “I Could Have Danced All Night” and Daniel Pinkham’s “Christmas Cantata.”

Admission is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact Dietrich at 814-898-6636.
