ESM's Lakhtakia named fellow of American Physical Union

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Akhlesh Lakhtakia, the Charles Godfrey Binder Professor in Engineering Science and Mechanics, was named a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) after the group's council meeting earlier this month.

Lakhtakia was cited for his conceptualization of sculptured thin films; theoretical and experimental research in optics on sculptured thin films; design, fabrication and characterization of optical devices for circular polarization; and significant extensions to biomedical, biomimetic and forensics arenas.

Election to APS fellow is limited to no more than one half of one percent of the organization's membership.

Lakhtakia has been a member of the Penn State faculty for 29 years. He holds a bachelor of engineering in electronics engineering from India's Banaras Hindu University, an master of science and doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Utah and a doctorate of science in electronics engineering from Banaras Hindu University.
