“The Roving Editor, or Talks with Slaves in the Southern State, by James Redpath” edited by John R. McKivigan(1996, Penn State University Press) was originally published in 1859 by Redpath while he was a reporter at Horace Greeley's New York Tribune, where he developed a strong curiosity about slavery and decided that he would travel south “to see slavery with my own eyes.” McKivigan’s research uncovers important historical records that certify the authenticity of Redpath's interviews. McKivian presents original newspaper articles and Redpath’s unpublished correspondence to supply places and times of many of Redpath’s encounters of enslaved people, which the author had omitted in the original publication.
