John Buzzell

John Buzzell

World War II veteran

At right is John G. Buzzell, 97; at left, a cryptanalyst in the U.S. Army, 3250 Signal Service. In Buzzell's words: "We were officially a radio intelligence unit disguised as a Signal Service company, assigned to identify, track and monitor German units facing us, so we were supposed to be close to the front but not in combat danger." Some of his memories include waiting for D-Day on board the USS Ancon; the push toward the Eastern front; and finishing his service the summer of 1945 in the Czech Republic (the city of Plzeň) while waiting to be sent home. Buzzell has lived in State College since 1989 and has two children who are Penn State alumni, three grandchildren who are either alumni or current students, and two more to come.
