Ramiah's first birthday

Ramiah Martin, 1, lets out a little smile as her mother, Leanne, foreground, father, Robert, rear right, and grandfather, Richard Householder, help celebrate her first birthday in the Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit at Penn State Children’s Hospital on Dec. 12, 2018. Ramiah had been diagnosed with a rare condition called tracheal agenesis, meaning she was born without a trachea. Once this was discovered, a 3D printed device was surgically implanted as a scaffold to help Ramiah’s esophagus serve as a replacement for her missing trachea.
