Mackinly Adams shares a laugh with other students in Penn State New Kensington's Cafe 780. Adams was diagnosed with a rare form of actinic prurigo, which can cause severe internal and external reactions because of sunlight and UV rays. The campus, which had already started converting older lighting to more sustainable LED lighting, leveraged vendors and funding so that more than 700 bulbs could be changed over the summer to create light-safe pathways for Adams to realize his dream of going to college. “One of the things I asked Mack first was finding out what was most important to him,” said Theresa Bonk, director of student affairs. “What I heard over and over again was, ‘I want to be a college student.’”
