Edward Dudley, associate professor of food science in the College of Agricultural Sciences, and Chun Chen, a former Ph.D. student of Dudley's, grew O157:H7 in the laboratory together with a variety of strains of common gut E. coli to confirm suspicions over whether or not the different microorganisms within in our gut could cause different reactions to this dangerous strain of bacteria. Their study suggests what E. coli strains are present in a person's intestines might actually play a role in dictating the course of the disease.
