Hospital of Horrors: NPO

The sign in the background says "NPO," which stands for "nil per os," a Latin phrase that means "nothing by mouth" in medical parlance. However, a can of soda and bag of potato chips are clearly visible at the patient's bedside. The NPO instruction is typically mandated for patients who will undergo general anesthetic for a medical procedure, or in cases of gastrointestinal bleeding or blockage or acute pancreatitis. In addition, lab vials with specimens are located on the table next to the food, posing a risk of contamination.
