Penn State joins global effort for open access to emerging coronavirus research
Penn State has joined a global coalition of researcher organizations pledging to provide immediate open access to emerging research findings related to the outbreak of the 2019 coronavirus. Penn State is the first U.S. university to join.

Program to introduce undergrad researchers to machine learning in cybersecurity
Undergraduate students interested in machine learning in cybersecurity research activities are invited to apply to a new Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site program, to be hosted this summer at the College of Information Sciences and Technology. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the intensive 10-week program will engage research-oriented undergraduate students in research projects focusing on topics such as fake news mitigation, smart contract fraud, and privacy in conversational agents.

Computers scour satellite imagery to unveil Madagascar's mysteries
Scientists may be a step closer to solving some of anthropology's biggest mysteries thanks to a machine learning algorithm that can scour through remote sensing data, such as satellite imagery, looking for signs of human settlements.

Holstein steers given hormone implants grow as well as beef steers
Holstein steers that get hormone implants grow faster than those that do not receive the implants, and they get as big as beef cattle breeds, according to Penn State researchers, who say that's good news for dairy farmers struggling to keep their operations financially viable.

New research center will focus on socially responsible artificial intelligence
Penn State has launched the Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence, a multi-unit research center that promotes the thoughtful development and application of AI and studies its impact on all areas of human endeavor.

Penn State launches new Assessment Management System
The Penn State Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research has launched the University's new online Assessment Management System (AMS) for use in program learning outcomes assessment. The launch of the AMS caps off a successful year of pilot testing with a diverse user group whose extensive feedback resulted in a highly customized and efficient tool for Penn State's assessment reporting needs.

Pennsylvania Second Lady Gisele Fetterman will host a panel discussion around the 2020 Census from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 19, in the Freeman Auditorium, HUB-Robeson Center, on Penn State's University Park campus.

Talk by blind filmmaker part of Black History Month celebration
Aziza Baccouche, president and CEO of Aziza Productions, will give a talk titled "Seeking vision: The journey of a legally blind physicist and filmmaker," at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Memorial Lounge of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center on the University Park campus. The lecture is part of Penn State's Black History Month celebration and is free and open to the public.
