A plastic bottle becomes a jacket, an aluminum can a bicycle. When consumers are reminded of the products that their recyclables can be turned into, they are more likely to recycle, according to researchers.

Preventing a protein from doing its job may keep a certain type of ovarian cancer cell from growing and dividing uncontrollably in the lab, according to a new study from Penn State College of Medicine.

New method helping to find deletions and duplications in the human genome
A new machine-learning method developed by researchers at Penn State accurately identifies regions of the human genome that have been duplicated or deleted — known as copy number variants — that are often associated with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

In September 1855, local dignitaries gathered at Centre Furnace Mansion in Centre County and signed a document establishing a site for an idea that, at the time, was considered a bit of an experiment — The Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania. The fledgling institution's aim was to encourage the application of science to farming.

Joseph J. Doncsecz, associate vice president for finance and corporate controller for Penn State, has been named the College of Medicine's interim associate vice president for finance and business, effective Aug. 1. Susan Wiedemer, associate controller and assistant treasurer at Penn State, will take over for Doncsecz on an interim basis.

Pasto Agricultural Museum participates in Apollo 11 anniversary event
Tuesday, July 16, marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission's Saturn V rocket launch. Three Penn State colleges, the NASA Pennsylvania Space Grant Consortium and the Pasto Agricultural Museum will mark the occasion with a free family event that will include a simultaneous rocket launch, hands-on activities, exhibits and demonstrations.
