The Penn State Alumni Association will honor 16 Penn Staters on Oct. 23 with the Alumni Fellow Award, the highest award given by the Alumni Association.

Meet two of the Alumni Association's 2019-20 student organization presidents
Neither Blue & White Society President Melany Mazaleski, a senior biology major, nor Lion Ambassadors President Alex Moon, a senior studying political science and psychology, ever expected to hold their current positions when they first joined their respective organizations. Now, four years into their college experience, neither could possibly think about Penn State without being involved with their groups.

Limited spots left for Penn State Tailgates at away football games
Penn State alumni and fans are invited to cheer on the Nittany Lion football team at this season's Penn State Tailgates, the premier pregame event at away games, hosted by the Penn State Alumni Association.

ESPN's College GameDay set for the HUB Lawn on Saturday
ESPN's College GameDay program will be live from Penn State's HUB Lawn on Oct. 19, ahead of the Nittany Lions' primetime meeting with Michigan at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. A number of traffic and parking changes will be in effect starting on Oct. 16.

ESPN's Jay Bilas, former U.S. Rep. Tom McMillen highlight sports conference
A two-day conference focused on intercollegiate athletics — featuring an opening keynote address by ESPN's Jay Bilas and closing remarks by former U.S. Rep. and NBA player Tom McMillen, president and CEO of the LEAD1 Association — will be conducted Oct. 17-18 on Penn State's University Park campus. The conference is coordinated by Penn State's interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Sports in Society.

Penn State community recognizes World War II veterans, 1 of 2 albums
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, approximately 16 million Americans served during World War II. Of those who served, it is estimated that less than 5%, or roughly 400,000 veterans, are still alive — most 90 years old or older. This is the first of two photo albums featuring some of these World War II veterans with Penn State connections.

University names Louis A. Martarano 2019 Fundraising Volunteer of the Year
Penn State has named alumnus and longtime volunteer and philanthropist Louis A. Martarano as its 2019 Fundraising Volunteer of the Year. The award, which recognizes an individual, couple or group who has demonstrated exceptional commitment and leadership in building philanthropic support for the University, was presented to Martarano at a ceremony held at The Nittany Lion Inn on Oct. 4.

Well cited: Engineering alumnus' decades-old work has stood the test of time
Muhammad Nawaz, an industrial engineering alumnus who graduated from Penn State in 1980 with a master of engineering degree, has accumulated nearly 2,400 citations for his thesis on how to organize an order of tasks, or jobs, for maximum efficiency. His work led to the creation of a widely used research algorithm that continues to earn him recognition nearly four decades later.

For the love of maps and hoops: Geography alumnus excels in basketball analytics
Penn State geography alumnus Kirk Goldsberry has found professional success combining his passions. He is a leader in basketball analytics, having worked as an NBA front office executive and a writer for ESPN. In his most recent work, The New York Times best-selling book "SprawBall: A Visual Tour of the New Era of the NBA," Goldsberry examines how the proliferation of the 3-point shot, and other trends, have helped transform the league, perhaps in unexpected ways.

Extremely dry, hot conditions this fall causing early, muted foliage display
With last year being the wettest year on record in Pennsylvania, and this year starting out wet again, 2019 was set up to be the mother of all fall foliage displays. Trees in most areas were in great condition going into late summer. But then it quit raining — in a big way.
