Timothy Bertram of Nittany Delivery handed out copies of The New York Times in the HUB-Robeson Center Tuesday (Jan. 20) as part of the Student Newspaper Readership Program at Penn State, on the occasion of the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Representing USA Today, Mike Miller, the newspaper's district sales manager, was handing out historic copies of the today's edition of the national newspaper to students, faculty and staff.

As the appointed time of high noon approached, the main lounge near the large-screen television in the HUB quickly began to fill.

Several hundred students, faculty and staff members spilled out beyond the HUB lounge as a standing-room (and floor-seated) crowd gathered to view history being made.

Nearby, the activities in the HUB's Heritage Hall peaked when President Obama took the oath of office, as projected on a large screen at the front of the room.

Inside Pattee Library, another standing-room-only crowd assembled inside Foster Auditorium to watch the inaugural events unfold.

As the noon hour approached, students traveling from classes, most of whom voted in their first presidential election only two months ago, found floor space at Foster Auditorium to view the inauguration.

The crowd erupted in applause as high noon passed and Obama was automatically declared the 44th president of the United States, in accordance with constitutional law.
