Beethoven Concert 001
The Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra and Choirs presented Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, op. 125, Saturday night (April 26) in Eisenhower Auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus. The concert opened with world premiere of student Craig Schwartz's Les Temps Ephemere.

The Choirs entered the stage after intermission, at the beginning of the third movement of Symphony 9.

A large crowd was in attendance for the concert. This performance marks only the third time Beethoven has been performed here.

More than 350 singers were on stage for the symphony, along with more than 100 musicians in orchestra.

Guest soloists were Kelly Lynch (soprano), Lorie Gratis (mezzo soprano), Richard Kennedy (tenor) and Tomothy LeFebvre (bass).

The program also featured violinist Joe Kaufmann, winner of the 2008 Penn State Philharmonic Concerto Competition, playing the Sibelius Violin Concerto.

Conductor Gerardo Edelstein recognized individual soloists during the applause.

The audience congratulated the performers with an extended standing ovation of between three and five minutes following the concert.
