Opioids: The Crisis Next Door - A Conference for Professionals and the Public

Penn State Schuylkill and Lehigh Valley Hospital - Schuylkill, part of the Lehigh Valley Health Network, are teaming up to present "Opioids: The Crisis Next Door," a conference addressing a timely topic. The general public, health care providers, law enforcement officers, first responders and more are encouraged to join. The conference will address the facts about the disease of addiction, the signs of opioid abuse, and the resources available to victims and their loved ones.

Keynote Address

  • 9:30 to 10 a.m.
  • Presented by Glenn Sterner, assistant professor of criminal justice, Penn State Abington

Current Drug Trends

  • 10:15 to 10:45 a.m.
  • Presented by Michael O'Pake, Schuylkill County district attorney

Counseling and Resources

  • 10:45 to 11:15 a.m.
  • Presented by William Rowan, program director, Center for Counseling Services, Lehigh Valley Hospital — Schuylkill

Recognizing the Hidden Signs of Drug Abuse, and Preventative Tools

  • 11:30 a.m. to noon
  • Presented by Diane Rowland, preventative services coordinator, Schuylkill County Drug and Alcohol Program

Integrated Team Approaches to Recovery and Wellness

  • Noon to 12:30 p.m.
  • Presented by Dr. Gillian Beauchamp, Lehigh Valley Health Network, Department of Emergency and Hospital Medicine, Section of Medical Toxicology

Panel Discussions with Professionals and Testimonials

  • 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Grassroots organizations, providers, and resources will also be available along Penn State Schuylkill's mall walk. Speak with professionals who may have advice relevant to your personal life or profession and walk away with a new perspective.

The conference is free and open to the public. For planning purposes, registration is required for all attendees and grassroots organizations. Breakfast and a light lunch will be included.

Due to the adult nature of the content discussed, this conference is intended for community members aged 14 and older.
