Jon Vaitl knows the value of hard work — but that sometimes luck isn’t such a bad thing, either. The third-year law student at Dickinson Law has secured a coveted federal clerkship with Judge John E. Jones III ’80, Middle District of Pennsylvania, a position for which Vaitl neither applied nor interviewed. That’s the luck part.
The competition was tough, and it was a close decision. First-year law students Nader Amer and Michael Slobom earned the win at Dickinson Law’s 1L mock trial competition on March 17 in the Apfelbaum Family Courtroom and Auditorium, Lewis Katz Hall, Dickinson Law. Sixteen teams competed in the competition, which was co-chaired by third-year law students and National Trial Team members Francesca Kester and Christian Burne.
Dickinson Law's Public Interest Law Fund is hosting the annual Race Judicata 5K Walk/Fun Run at 10 a.m. on April 15. All proceeds from the event will benefit PILF, which is dedicated to promoting student interest and community involvement in the field of public interest law.
William E. Butler, the John Edward Fowler Distinguished Professor of Law at Dickinson Law, received the Gold Medal from the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine. The National Academy’s highest honor, the Gold Medal recognizes meritorious services to Ukrainian law.
Dickinson Law Dean Gary S. Gildin and Penn State Law Interim Dean James W. Houck presented honorary plaques and pillows to 12 third-year students at Dickinson Law as part of the Woolsack Society induction ceremony and luncheon on Monday, March 20. The ceremony is held each spring.

Dickinson Law will host a presentation on Aliens Among Us: A Q&A about immigration. The life of a refugee or immigrant is mysteriously hopeful yet filled with the anxiety of uncertainty. Anxious uncertainty also describes the angst communities feel as refugees and immigrants impact their norms. Shaped by the atrocities of a brutal civil war, three women will share their experiences as first- and second-generation immigrants from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in the Apfelbaum Family Courtroom and Auditorium, Lewis Katz Hall, Carlisle. A question-and-answer session about immigration will follow.

Monique Lin-Luse, assistant counsel of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Legal Defense and Education Fund, will deliver a keynote focused on desegregation of schools and educational issues on Monday, Feb. 27, as part of Black History Month. Hosted by Dickinson Law’s Black Law Students Association (BLSA), her lecture will take place at 6 p.m. in Lewis Katz Hall, room 112, Carlisle.
Third-year law student Francesca Kester was named the 2016 recipient of the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation Joseph T. McDonald Scholarship. Michael J. McDonald, a 1979 alumnus and managing partner of McDonald and MacGregor LLC, presented the award to Kester in the Apfelbaum Family Courtroom and Auditorium, located in Lewis Katz Hall at Dickinson Law.
Dickinson Law students are offering free tax preparation services to people with low and fixed incomes, people who have disabilities or special needs, and senior citizens aged 60 or older.
