Edmondson appointed to Undergraduate Education post

Jacqueline Edmondson has been appointed associate vice president and associate dean for Undergraduate Education, effective June 1. In this capacity, Edmondson will join the leadership team in Office of Undergraduate Education, which provides collaborative direction and coordination for University-wide programs and initiatives in support of undergraduate teaching, learning, and enrollments at Penn State, such as the University-wide conversation on the student experience, involving aspects such as the curriculum, access, diversity, academic advising, engaged scholarship and new models for learning.

Alumni couple's gift will help architectural engineering students study abroad

Architectural engineering students hoping to study abroad may get some help realizing their dream, thanks to a gift by a Penn State engineering couple in Florida. A new scholarship, the Beabout the World Study Abroad Scholarship in Architectural Engineering, will provide recognition and financial assistance to undergraduate architectural engineering students studying at the University Park campus who are passionate about exploring and engaging with their world.

Berks student Brendel awarded prestigious Beinecke Scholarship

Chris Brendel, a junior majoring in Communication Arts and Sciences at Penn State Berks, recently was awarded the prestigious Beinecke Scholarship. He was selected as the University’s sole student nominee for 2013 and is only the second Penn State student to receive the award in the 22-year history of the Beinecke Scholarship. He is the first Penn State student to receive the award from a campus outside University Park.

Rachel Thor, a fifth-year senior from State College, Pa., says her goal upon entering college was to be "fully alive" the whole time. Her senior project in the bachelor of philosophy intercollege program culminated in a monthlong road tour with other education entrepreneurs searching to change the narrative around education.

Each year, Penn State honors several undergraduate and graduate students for the highest levels of academic excellence, outstanding leadership and meritorious service. The 2013 Student Award recipients reach across campuses and colleges and exemplify best practices and achievements among Penn State students reflecting the University's mission of teaching, research and service. The 30 honorees will receive their awards at a ceremony at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 7, at Eisenhower Auditorium.

Six faculty members receive Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching

Six Penn State faculty members have received the 2013 George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching. They are Charles Elavsky, assistant professor of communications in the College of Communications; Mikhail Kagan, assistant professor of physics at Penn State Abington; Kathy Meehan, senior instructor of human development and family studies at Penn State Brandywine; Debra Miller, instructor of social sciences and education at Penn State Lehigh Valley; Cindy Parsons, senior lecturer of mathematics in the Eberly College of Science, and Peter Wilf, associate professor of geosciences in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. The award, named after Penn State's seventh president, honors excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.

Penn State Reads, a new common reading program for first-year University Park campus students, is designed to provide a shared experience among new students, encourage intellectual engagement within and beyond the classroom, stimulate critical thinking, and foster a deeper connection to Penn State's mission and core values. The book "Beautiful Souls: Saying No, Breaking Ranks and Heeding the Voice of Conscience in Dark Times" by author Eyal Press has been selected for the 2013-14 Penn State Reads program.

Penn State joins national competition to reduce electricity use on campus

From March 25 through April 14, Penn State will join more than 200 universities and colleges nationwide in a competition to achieve the greatest electricity reductions in their residence halls over a three-week period. Fight the Power: The East Halls Energy Challenge is part of Campus Conservation Nationals (CCN) 2013.

Judges needed as Undergraduate Exhibition entries reach new high

Faculty and graduate student judges are needed for the 2013 Undergraduate Exhibition on April 10. The exhibition is held at the University Park campus and is open to undergraduate students at all Penn State campuses. Judges play an important role in the event, providing entrants the opportunity to present and discuss their work.
