Brandywine hosts travel to Spain, Italy and China in 2013-14

Penn State Brandywine Global Programs has released its upcoming study abroad lineup for the 2013-14 academic year. In November 2013 (over Thanksgiving break), the campus will travel to Barcelona, Spain, followed by spring break 2014 in Rome and Florence, Italy, and an additional trip in the spring to China. More details about these programs will be released shortly.

Alumni couple's gift will help architectural engineering students study abroad

Architectural engineering students hoping to study abroad may get some help realizing their dream, thanks to a gift by a Penn State engineering couple in Florida. A new scholarship, the Beabout the World Study Abroad Scholarship in Architectural Engineering, will provide recognition and financial assistance to undergraduate architectural engineering students studying at the University Park campus who are passionate about exploring and engaging with their world.

Japan Foundation supports new Global Japan Project

The new Global Japan Project at Penn State will blaze new pathways for teaching and research to connect students and faculty in a wide variety of disciplines to their counterparts in Japan. Thanks to significant support from the Japan Foundation and Penn State, the project will develop enhanced research, exchange, and networking opportunities for students and faculty in humanities, social sciences, education, business, and international affairs. The Asian Studies Program and the Center for Global Studies, both in the College of the Liberal Arts, will help forge links among Japanese Studies, other academic colleges at Penn State, and peer institutions in Japan.

Two faculty members in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences are among five people honored by the University's Office of Global Programs with 2013 Spirit of Internationalization Awards. The college's honorees were Kathleen Kelley, associate professor of horticultural marketing and business management, and Audrey Maretzki, professor emeritus of food science and nutrition.

For students in the engineering leadership development minor, it’s the project that keeps on giving. Over the past three years, Penn Staters have been designing and building machines to process baobab – a football-sized fruit harvested in Africa that serves as both a food and income source.

A leading media scholar will address television portrayals of different cultures when she presents the Robert M. Pockrass Memorial Lecture at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 8, in Foster Auditorium of Paterno Library on the University Park campus at Penn State.

West African Griot to perform at Penn State Schuylkill

On Tuesday, March 19, Papa Susso will be bringing his music and oral history to Penn State Schuylkill. Susso, who has performed on the campus before, will be presenting his music and oral history in two of Charles Cantalupo, distinguished professor of English, comparative literature, and African studies, classes, in addition to a two-hour presentation from noon to 2 p.m. at a luncheon on the campus. The classes are open to all members of the campus community.

Penn State is proud of its Fulbright tradition, especially this year, when the University is a "Top Producer" nationwide of both student and faculty/staff Fulbright grantees. In celebration, the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Fulbright Association, in conjunction with the University Office of Global Programs (UOGP) and the University Fellowships Office (UFO), is sponsoring Fulbright Week from March 25 to 29.

Students devoting spring break to sustainability in Honduras

Eleven Penn State engineering students left March 2-3 for Honduras to spend spring break designing, building and installing a solar photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof of a day care center in Roatan. The trip is part of Penn State's Renewable Energy for Central America (RECA) program, which is committed to bringing students and certified electrical contractors together to foster and advance the adoption of renewable energy solutions and energy savings plans for Roatan's island communities.
