Adidas reaches agreement with factory workers; Penn State restores contract

Penn State has restored its contract with Adidas, one of several companies that produce Penn State apparel and items, in light of an announcement that the company has reached an agreement over severance pay owed by a subcontractor to Indonesian workers. The University suspended its contract with Adidas on March 13, requesting a fair resolution to the dispute within 60 days.

Penn State President Rodney Erickson delivered the following remarks during the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees, held May 3 at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel.

Thank you, Keith. I, too, want to begin by thanking Paula Ammerman for her 35 years of service to Penn State. Her vast knowledge, strong work ethic and organizational skills have helped guide this board through thick and thin. Penn State is better for her efforts, and we wish her the best in retirement. Thank you, Paula.

On July 1, we'll be welcoming a new provost and executive vice president, pending Board approval later today. Nicholas Jones, the Benjamin T. Rome dean of the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, was selected in a nationwide search led by a 17-member search advisory committee, with assistance by executive search firm Isaacson, Miller. Nick has won several teaching awards, has an outstanding record of research and is a gifted administrator. He will be great addition to Penn State.

Ground broken on Energy Efficient Buildings Hub headquarters

Penn State, with support from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Economic Development Administration, celebrated the development of two buildings at the Energy Efficient Buildings (EEB) Hub during a groundbreaking ceremony on April 24 at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia.

Womack named 2013-14 Penn State laureate

Kenneth Womack, associate dean for Academic Affairs and professor of English and integrative arts at Penn State Altoona, has been named Penn State laureate for the 2013-14 academic year. A prolific writer of a variety of both scholarly and general-audience topics, Womack is highly regarded as an expert of popular culture, most notably of the Beatles, and also is a critically acclaimed novelist.

Forums will help shape Penn State’s criteria for next president

As Penn State searches for a new leader, faculty, staff and students will get the chance to offer input during two sessions Thursday (March 21) on campus. The forums are set for 1 to 2 p.m., in Room 117 (the HUB Auditorium), HUB-Robeson Center; and 6 to 7 p.m., in Room 105, Forum Building. A forum also is planned for 2:15-3:15 p.m. March 22, in Room 102 (the Foster Auditorium), Paterno Library.

Special thanks to Hal Paz, senior vice president for Health Affairs and CEO of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, and the many faculty, staff and students, who have been so welcoming and helpful throughout our Board visit. Holding our March meeting on this campus has become an annual tradition, and one that reflects the strong connections the Medical Center and College of Medicine have within our University and the Commonwealth.

Effective immediately, Penn State has suspended its licensing contract with Adidas, one of several companies that produce Penn State apparel and items. The decision to suspend the contract has been made in light of issues raised by the closure of an Indonesian clothing factory and the subsequent failure of an Adidas subcontractor to pay severance owed to laid-off workers under Indonesian law.

Forums to focus on presidential search

A series of three forums focused on gathering feedback and input from the University community regarding the search for Penn State's next president will be held on March 21 and 22. Representatives from Isaacson, Miller, the firm retained by Penn State to conduct the search, will be seeking input and engagement regarding the traits and characteristics that the University's next president should embody and the opportunities and challenges the next president will face.
