Behrend class asks students to build a better grocery bag

The door to Rob Weissbach’s dollhouse is wired with a buzzer and a bright LED light – protection against any Weebles that might wobble in. On April 18, Weissbach, an associate professor of engineering at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, used the dollhouse to teach basic circuitry to some seventh-graders from Warren County’s Eisenhower Middle School, on campus for the annual 21st Century Kids program.

From June 6 to 8, more than 2,500 Special Olympians and coaches will convene at Penn State’s University Park campus for the annual Summer Games of the Special Olympics. Preparation for the four-day event begins days before the athletes arrive and volunteers are now being enlisted to help with dozens of pre-game activities.

William Fustos, the former chief operating officer at East Resources, will be giving a lecture on "The Marcellus Shale: Economic Boom for Pennsylvania, Energy Security for the U.S.," as Penn State's 2013 G. Albert Shoemaker Lecturer in Mineral Engineering. The event begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, with a reception in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences Museum Gallery on the ground floor of Deike Building. The lecture begins promptly at 4 p.m., in Room 22 Deike Building.

Layoffs at GE Transportation, the largest employer in Erie County, could raise the county's unemployment rate by 0.6 percent, said Jim Kurre, professor of economics at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, and director of the Economic Research Institute of Erie.

Town-gown partnership seeks 'alcohol-free' downtown on State Patty's Day

A town-gown partnership that for more than a decade has been united against high-risk drinking is employing new tactics to keep downtown State College alcohol-free on what has become known as "State Patty's Day."

An agreement has been reached with downtown State College taverns and restaurants to halt the sale of alcohol on Feb. 23, the date set for this year's State Patty’s Day, an event created by students six years ago. Establishments will still offer food and non-alcoholic drinks, maintaining downtown’s appeal for responsible visitors.

High school students who are interested in the visual arts will learn how to make a portfolio of their work during the week-long camp.

Campers develop skills at Penn State’s youth summer camps

New this year, the School of Visual Arts Summer Art Camp (July 7 to 12) will teach high school students who are interested in the visual arts how to create a portfolio of their work. The camp’s theme, “Portfolio Processes,” underscores the goals of the program – to show campers how to create exciting artworks in different media and to develop a digital portfolio. The camp coincides with the 2013 Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.

Kids in College summer program turns 25

Young students' imaginations will soar to great heights this summer as Penn State New Kensington celebrates 25 years of its Kids in College program.

For a quarter of a century, the Office of Continuing Education has offered a variety of academic and sports activities for students in grades one through 12. Each year, more than 400 youths participate in the hands-on camps. For the past 10 years, the program blended its traditional camps with the Pennsylvania STEM.

Career Fair brings together students, residents and employers May 17

Pennsylvania’s improving job market is reflected in its unemployment rate, now 7.2 percent in central Pennsylvania, as more companies ramp up hiring. Central Pennsylvania residents who want to learn about job opportunities in this region are invited to attend the sixth annual Central Pennsylvania Regional Career Fair from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 17, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in Innovation Park. More than 65 employers will be at the event.

Vision Council charts path for Penn State amid presidential search

Two groups playing an integral role in finding Penn State’s next president now have an important document to assist in the effort. Today (May 2) members of the 13-member Trustee Presidential Selection Council and the 18-member Presidential Search and Screen Committee received “A Vision for Penn State: A Report of the Blue and White Vision Council.” The report, available at http://www.psu.edu/trustees/bwvc_report.pdf, will help inform the search as well as provide any candidates with a unique perspective.
