The Pennsylvania Center for the Book announces the Pennsylvania winners of the 2013 Letters About Literature contest, a nationwide event sponsored by the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. The Center for the Book was established in 1977 as a public-private partnership to use the resources of the Library of Congress to stimulate public interest in books and reading.

Penn State will be spotlighted in a new Pennsylvania Cable Network series that profiles the state's economic engines at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 23. “Discover PA Business," a collaboration between PCN and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, began as a monthly series earlier this year.
University Park employees urged to curb energy use during one-hour test June 20

This Thursday (June 20) from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Penn State will again test University Park’s capability to reduce its electricity load when called upon during national or regional power emergencies. The Office of Physical Plant (OPP) will be working behind the scenes to reduce the overall electrical load remotely during this one-hour test. However, all University employees and students are requested to turn off all unnecessary lighting, office equipment, coffee pots, dehumidifiers, and air conditioning. University offices should stay open and operate in a normal manner while reducing their consumption of electricity.

DuBois program readies 15 for work in natural gas industry

A total of 15 people graduated from the Floor Hand Training Program at Penn State DuBois on Friday, June 7, armed with new knowledge and certifications that qualify them for a wide range of jobs in the natural gas industry. Floor hands operate and maintain drilling systems and pumps by connecting and disconnecting pipes, inspecting derricks, cleaning and oiling derricks, and performing other general maintenance tasks around the rig.

Judicial internships provide valuable learning experience for foreign lawyers

From pre-trial motions to sentence hearings, nine Penn State Dickinson School of Law LL.M. (master of laws) students from around the world are experiencing the American legal system firsthand as interns in Penn State Law’s LL.M. Judicial Observation Internship program. Paired with a Pennsylvania state trial court judge, students spend an intensive five weeks observing various civil and criminal litigation proceedings brought before the court.
Shaver’s Creek witnessing collapse of Pennsylvania bat population

Doug Wentzel can count the number of little brown bats at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center on one hand. Wentzel, a naturalist and program director at Penn State’s nature center, has been observing the flying creatures for years and in the past, he’s seen thousands make their summer homes in central Pennsylvania. At last check, the bat boxes at Shaver’s Creek house only three bats.
