Penn State York professor offers a look at 'Downton Abbey'

Jennifer Nesbitt, associate professor of English at Penn State York, will offer a look at the PBS hit drama “Downton Abbey” at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 22, in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center at the campus. The event, sponsored by Penn State York’s Lee R. Glatfelter Library, is free and open to the public.

IST film screening to focus on cyber threats

In today’s interconnected society, cyber-attacks, identity theft and privacy invasion pose increasing threats to national and personal security. Students, faculty and staff at Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) will gather next week to watch a new documentary film directed by a Penn State alumnus that explores the “wide-spanning socio-technical fallout caused by data collection and social networks.”

Penn State Greater Allegheny, for the fifth year, is a proud sponsor of the Silkscreen Asian American film festival. On the next installment of WPSU-TV’s “Conversations LIVE,” Patty Satalia, host of the monthly call-in program, will be joined by guests Michael Connett of the Fluoride Action Network, Michal Meyer, editor-in-chief of Chemical Heritage magazine and Dr. Craig Collison, a pediatric physician with the Mount Nittany Physician Group in a discussion of “Community Water Fluoridation” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 21.

'Papers: Stories of Undocumented Youth' film to be shown April 3

The Commission on Racial/Ethnic Diversity (CORED) will present "Papers: Stories of Undocumented Youth" at 3:35 p.m. April 3, in 104 Thomas Building. The film tells the story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status. The screening will be followed by an interactive discussion led by Victor Romero, Maureen B. Cavanaugh Distinguished Faculty Scholar and Professor of Law at Penn State Dickinson School of Law. Both the movie and the discussion are free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

On March 18, "Globalized Soul: Stories from the Tipping Point of the New World" is coming to The Pasquerilla Spiritual Center. The Penn State Center for Ethics and Religious Affairs will host this award-winning documentary along with its director-producer, Kell Kearns, and producer, Cynthia Lukas, of Heaven on Earth Creations.

Penn State’s MLK Jr. Memorial Banquet to air Feb. 28 on WPSU

WPSU-TV will broadcast Penn State's 38th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Banquet at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. The event was held on Jan. 15, and featured a keynote address from Samuel C. Thompson Jr., director of the Center for the Study of Mergers and Acquisitions and professor at Penn State Dickinson School of Law, remarks from University President Rodney Erikson, and a performance from Essence of Joy. Thompson’s speech focused on the history of slavery and segregation, as well as Martin Luther King’s dreams referenced from various speeches.

PCN 'Call-In' program coming to Penn State

Despite Punxsutawney Phil's prediction of an early spring, winter weather will be the topic of discussion as the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) takes their cameras on-location for a live PCN "Call-In" program with the hosts of "Weather World" at their studio at Penn State. Episode two of "World on Trial," an international human rights television and Web program produced by Penn State Dickinson School of Law, will feature Judge James E. Baker of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces as presiding judge, and Jameel Jaffer of the American Civil Liberties Union, and former F-14 pilot and law of war scholar Michael Lewis as lead attorneys. The series presents both sides of sharply contested international human rights issues in the context of courtroom trials before live multinational juries.

Penn State Lehigh Valley will hold its annual commencement ceremony at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pa. The campus will award associate and bachelor's degrees to roughly 65 local students. The featured speaker for the event is Jeffrey Tambor, Emmy-nominated film and television actor. A Penn State literary scholar, James L. W. West III, the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English, has played a key behind-the-scenes role as a consultant to the director and cast of the upcoming Warner Brothers film "The Great Gatsby." West is general editor of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and published Trimalchio: An Early Version of "The Great Gatsby" in 2000.

When Penn State Lehigh Valley student Megan Pustaver began working out and then working at the Easton branch of Retro Fitness she couldn't have imagined how her life would change in just a year. In addition to making significant strides toward her health and weight-loss goals, the Easton resident can now thank the company for helping her make her national television debut. Pustaver will be featured prominently on the next episode of the CBS hit show "Undercover Boss," airing at 8 p.m. Friday, April 26.

TV Field Production class to hold advance screening of news show

COMM 282, the Television Field Production course, is ready to air its final project, a 15-minute news show titled "Our Penn State Lehigh Valley" at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in the auditorium at Penn State Lehigh Valley. The course, new this semester and instructed by PBS station manager Amy Burkett, had students working and filming at the PBS-39 studio located at the SteelStacks in Bethlehem. The event is free and open to the public.

The College of Arts and Architecture will host a screening of "Raising Renee," the HBO documentary about artist and Penn State alumna Beverly McIver’s experiences caring for her mentally disabled sister, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art on the University Park campus of Penn State.
