Like their students, teachers across the country look forward to their summer vacation. But this summer, many teachers will be taking some of their time to continue learning or to provide enrichment opportunities for students. As it does each summer, the Lehigh Valley Writing Project (LVWP), a National Writing Project (NWP) site, is connecting local teachers with a variety of learning and professional development opportunities.

Letters About Literature contest winners announced

The Pennsylvania Center for the Book announces the Pennsylvania winners of the 2013 Letters About Literature contest, a nationwide event sponsored by the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. The Center for the Book was established in 1977 as a public-private partnership to use the resources of the Library of Congress to stimulate public interest in books and reading.

University Park employees urged to curb energy use during one-hour test June 20

This Thursday (June 20) from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Penn State will again test University Park’s capability to reduce its electricity load when called upon during national or regional power emergencies. The Office of Physical Plant (OPP) will be working behind the scenes to reduce the overall electrical load remotely during this one-hour test. However, all University employees and students are requested to turn off all unnecessary lighting, office equipment, coffee pots, dehumidifiers, and air conditioning. University offices should stay open and operate in a normal manner while reducing their consumption of electricity.

Two entrepreneurs win Ben Franklin TechCelerator’s Startup Boot Camp

The Ben Franklin TechCelerator@State College is pleased to announce the names of the two winners of its recent eight-week Boot Camp Program for budding tech entrepreneurs. Corey Dillon and Chris Houser, from Innovative Interseeding Technology, were awarded a $7,500 prize, while Lindsay Fairman from FairTech Labs took home a check for $2,500. The prize money was presented by Kevin Irick with SiliconScapes, a previous Boot Camp winner.

DuBois Office of Adult Student and Veteran Services lauded

The Penn State DuBois Office of Adult Student and Veteran Services was recently recognized by Penn State's Commission for Adult Learners. Sueann Doran, coordinator for Adult Student and Veteran Services received the recognition and served on a discussion panel for adult learner services at the university-wide Hendrick Best Practices for Adult Learners Conference at Penn State Harrisburg in May.

The United Nations has taken notice of the work of Penn State DuBois' own assistant professor of economics Evelyn Wamboye. Officials in the U.N.'s Committee for Development Policy, who work to improve the lives of people living in undeveloped countries, have asked Wamboye to contribute her expertise to their efforts.

As did most fledgling golfers in the mid-1990s, Sean Palmer grew up admiring Tiger Woods, one of the most successful golfers in the history of the sport. So when, decades later, Woods arrived at the Merion Golf Club on the outskirts of Philadelphia to practice for the U.S. Open (set to take place at the club from June 13 to 16), Palmer -- now a first assistant golf professional -- was more than pleased.

Evan Pugh, a Quaker and president of what would become Penn State, was opposed to students leaving college to fight in the Civil War. Nevertheless, 31 in all would join Union forces and at least two joined Confederate armies. Carol Reardon, George Winfree Professor of History at Penn State, talks about how the college answered the emergency call for an armed militia, placed by Andrew Curtin to defend the Commonwealth from Gen. Robert E. Lee's advancing Confederate troops.

Penn State will be spotlighted in a new Pennsylvania Cable Network series that profiles the state's economic engines at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 23. “Discover PA Business," a collaboration between PCN and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, began as a monthly series earlier this year.
