Guy Standing, professor in development studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, will offer the opening address, “The Precariat: Building Occupational Citizenship," at 7:15 p.m. March 20, in 101 Chambers Building, as part of the international symposium Global Workers’ Rights: Patterns of Exclusion, Possibilities for Change.

Penn State to celebrate Fulbright Week from March 25 to 29

Penn State is proud of its Fulbright tradition, especially this year, when the University is a "Top Producer" nationwide of both student and faculty/staff Fulbright grantees. In celebration, the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Fulbright Association, in conjunction with the University Office of Global Programs (UOGP) and the University Fellowships Office (UFO), is sponsoring Fulbright Week from March 25 to 29.

The 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place from March 4 to 15 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. In conjunction with the events focused on this year's conference theme, “The elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls,” Penn State’s International Center for the Study of Terrorism (ICST) is co-sponsoring a discussion on the growing trend of female suicide bombers with UAEZE Consulting.

Students devoting spring break to sustainability in Honduras

Eleven Penn State engineering students left March 2-3 for Honduras to spend spring break designing, building and installing a solar photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof of a day care center in Roatan. The trip is part of Penn State's Renewable Energy for Central America (RECA) program, which is committed to bringing students and certified electrical contractors together to foster and advance the adoption of renewable energy solutions and energy savings plans for Roatan's island communities.

Seventeen Penn State students will spend spring break in an exotic location on the other side of the world, but it's all about work -- not a vacation -- for the aspiring journalists. The students, members of COMM 402, International Reporting, have spent the first part of the spring semester preparing for their trip, an intensive weeklong effort to capture stories in Shanghai, China.

Pakistan’s Swat Valley and the brutal legacy of the Taliban’s recruitment of child militants will be the focus of a talk by John Horgan, director of the International Center for the Study of Terrorism (ICST) at Penn State. The event will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. April 3, in the Alumni Fireside Lounge at the Nittany Lion Inn. Horgan’s talk, titled “De-Radicalizing the Taliban’s Child Militants: A View from Swat Valley,” is free and open to the public.

Altoona alumna heads to Costa Rica with the Peace Corps

Lauren Hatch, an Altoona native and a May 2012 graduate with a degree in letters, arts and sciences, currently is a research assistant for professor Sandra Petrulionis at Penn State Altoona. But in March, she will embark on her life’s dream when she spends the next 27 months in Costa Rica with the Peace Corps. “When I found out I was accepted,” she said, “I was overjoyed. I started crying. This is something I can say I’ve wanted more than anything else in my life.”

World Campus military and veteran student enrollment continues to rise

The flexibility of online education is ideal for many adults who want to learn when and where it's convenient to them, and especially beneficial to active-duty military service members deployed in a war zone or where Internet access is limited. Since Penn State's World Campus launched 15 years ago, enrollment by active-duty military service members and veterans has grown steadily -- and more than 120 percent in the last four years.

Couple gives $2.2 million to establish faculty chair in geosciences

Two anonymous donors have made a $2.2 million gift to the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences' Department of Geosciences to create a faculty chair. Both hold doctorates and have an intimate understanding of the need for faculty support. The couple is remembering Penn State through a bequest that will leave a lasting legacy and support work in geochemistry.

Penn State Harrisburg senior interdisciplinary humanities major Cassandra Romanowski has been offered a Fulbright grant to teach English in Malaysia next year. Of the program’s hundreds of applicants from across the country, she was one of only 75 who made the cut -– a first-time achievement for a student at the college.

Applications being accepted for scholarships to study Arabic at Penn State

Scholarships are now available for area high school students and Pennsylvania college students who plan to study the Arabic language this summer at The Language Institute of Penn State. In the intensive, four-week STARTALK Arabic Academy program, which meets Monday through Friday from June 13 to July 10, students can complete the equivalent of a full semester's study of Arabic and receive four academic credits for Penn State's Arabic 001 course.

Penn State teams up with Taiwanese university to create learning sciences center

Penn State University and National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) have developed a collaboration to establish the Advanced Center for the Study of the Learning Sciences. Under a proposal funded by the Taiwan National Science Council, center researchers will devise ways for educators to keep pace with rapidly changing information and technology in society. Behavioral and neuro-cognitive research will serve as focal points for the center’s work.
