Ugandan study fuels undergraduate's interest in research

An award-winning research project is jumpstarting Penn State student Ce Zhang's career. Zhang, who worked on a project installing rudimentary water taps at rural schools in Uganda, is readying for graduation in spring 2012 to take his interests in global health to the next level.

The University Office of Global Programs (UOGP) has announced the 8th annual Global Perspectives photo contest for students. The deadline for entry is Nov. 1, and participants can win prizes and may have their work featured in posters, fliers and on the UOGP website.

Penn State celebrates International Education Week

In celebration of International Education Week, Nov. 15 to 19, Penn State will hold a number of University-wide events. For a full list of the more than 20 events offered, visit http://www.global.psu.edu/ and click on "list of events" under the International Education Week. Events include speakers, musical performances, a photo contest, cultural lunches, world poetry, a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, Club Kreyol's "A Walk for a Better Haiti," and much more.

Education Abroad Fair to take place Oct. 5 in the HUB-Robeson Center

The University Office of Global Programs (UOGP) will hold its annual Education Abroad Fair from noon to 5 p.m. on Oct. 5, in Alumni Hall at the HUB-Robeson Center on Penn State's University Park campus. The event will showcase more than 190 study abroad opportunities across the world.

Conversation with 'Shanghai Girls' author Lisa See set for Nov. 17

In celebration of International Education Week (Nov. 15-19), the University Office of Global Programs (UOGP) and Penn State University Libraries are co-sponsoring a community read of Lisa See's latest novel, "Shanghai Girls," as well as an opportunity to engage in a live conversation with the author. The reading experience will culminate with a conversation with See, live via teleconference, at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, in Foster Auditorium (room 102 Paterno Library).

International students come to Penn State Fayette for higher learning

Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus welcomed five new international students to the campus this fall, bringing a total of nine students from around the world. The new students include Xing Gao from Beijing, China; Sul Gi "Athena" Han from Seoul, South Korea; Malavika "Monica" Mathur from Bangkok, Thailand; Anisha Nayak from Kuwait City, Kuwait; and Mingxun Wang from China.

World Campus military and veteran student enrollment continues to rise

The flexibility of online education is ideal for many adults who want to learn when and where it's convenient to them, and especially beneficial to active-duty military service members deployed in a war zone or where Internet access is limited. Since Penn State's World Campus launched 15 years ago, enrollment by active-duty military service members and veterans has grown steadily -- and more than 120 percent in the last four years.

Couple gives $2.2 million to establish faculty chair in geosciences

Two anonymous donors have made a $2.2 million gift to the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences' Department of Geosciences to create a faculty chair. Both hold doctorates and have an intimate understanding of the need for faculty support. The couple is remembering Penn State through a bequest that will leave a lasting legacy and support work in geochemistry.

Penn State Harrisburg student offered Fulbright to teach English abroad

Penn State Harrisburg senior interdisciplinary humanities major Cassandra Romanowski has been offered a Fulbright grant to teach English in Malaysia next year. Of the program’s hundreds of applicants from across the country, she was one of only 75 who made the cut -– a first-time achievement for a student at the college.

Alumna Shubha N. Janardhan graduated from the Penn State Smeal College of Business in 2004 with a degree in management science and information systems with a specialization in health care. She’s now using her experience to run her family’s company, Haselfre, including a new initiative that provides wholesome care to women in different stages of motherhood.

Applications being accepted for scholarships to study Arabic at Penn State

Scholarships are now available for area high school students and Pennsylvania college students who plan to study the Arabic language this summer at The Language Institute of Penn State. In the intensive, four-week STARTALK Arabic Academy program, which meets Monday through Friday from June 13 to July 10, students can complete the equivalent of a full semester's study of Arabic and receive four academic credits for Penn State's Arabic 001 course.

Penn State teams up with Taiwanese university to create learning sciences center

Penn State University and National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) have developed a collaboration to establish the Advanced Center for the Study of the Learning Sciences. Under a proposal funded by the Taiwan National Science Council, center researchers will devise ways for educators to keep pace with rapidly changing information and technology in society. Behavioral and neuro-cognitive research will serve as focal points for the center’s work.
