Alle-Kiski Alumni Society's first meeting of the new year is Jan. 21

New and recent graduates of Penn State New Kensington can connect with fellow Penn Staters at the next monthly meeting of the Alle-Kiski Society at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in the campus Conference Center. Alumni who can't make the meeting can still exercise their Penn State spirit at the society's, "Alumni Social and Basketball Game," on Saturday, Feb 9. Graduates in the area are invited to cheer on the New Kensington Lions against Penn College at 3 p.m. in the campus Athletics Center. The social follows at 5 p.m. at Woodpeckers bar and Grill, located adjacent to the campus on state route 780 and Myers Drive in Upper Burrell. The social includes free food and cash bar. Nittany Lions welcome seven football student-athletes for spring

With the spring semester underway, Coach Bill O'Brien and the Nittany Lion football program have welcomed seven new student-athletes who are enrolled in classes. The players will be able to participate in winter strength and conditioning sessions, and spring practice with the returning Nittany Lions.

The list includes four high school players who graduated early and have signed to enroll at Penn State, and one junior-college signee for the spring semester. The January signees include running back Richy Anderson (Frederick, Md.), tight end Adam Breneman (Camp Hill, Pa.), quarterback Tyler Ferguson (Visalia, Calif.), defensive back Anthony Smith (Randolph, N.J.) and defensive back Jordan Smith (Washington, D.C.).

Barnes named to another Freshman All-America Team

Penn State defensive end Deion Barnes (Philadelphia) has been selected to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America team, earning his sixth such recognition following a superlative redshirt freshman season.

Sporting News, CBSsports.com, Phil Steele's College Football, FOXSports/Scout.com and CollegeFootballNews.com previously named Barnes a first-team Freshman All-American. Penn State tight end Kyle Carter (Bear, Del.), a first-team All-Big Ten selection, joined Barnes on the five Freshman All-America teams.

Baseball to host First Pitch Dinner

The Penn State baseball team will be hosting the inaugural First Pitch Dinner on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Ramada Conference Center in State College. Highlighted by keynote speaker Ben Petrick, a former second round pick of the Colorado Rockies, the evening will include an autograph session with the team, as well as remarks from head coach Robbie Wine and the Nittany Lion captains.

Nine former Nittany Lions on NFL playoff teams

Nine former Nittany Lions playing in the National Football League are on playoff teams, with at least one Penn Stater on seven of the squads vying for the Super Bowl XLVII title.

There are 30 former Nittany Lions with NFL teams, placing Penn State in the Top 15 nationally among schools in producing current NFL players. Penn State has had at least one alumnus on a Super Bowl team for 41 of 46 title games. Thirty-four former Nittany Lions have earned a total of 51 Super Bowl rings as players, including tackle Kareem McKenzie and defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy with the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI.

Lady Lions visit Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute

The Penn State Lady Lions basketball team made its first-ever trip to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, specifically to Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. Members of the media tagged along as team members toured the facility Jan. 2 and interacted with patients and staff. There's a strong connection between the team and Penn State Hershey - as the Lady Lions donate a portion of the proceeds from their annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone game to breast cancer research efforts at the Cancer Institute.

Coach Coquese Washington and members of her team toured a research lab in the Cancer Institute, where they were able to see and hear how the Pink Zone money directly supports breast cancer research efforts. Then it was off to the infusion therapy clinic where they met with patients, physicians, nurses and others. The team also visited the Medical Center's inpatient cancer unit.

Gondak promoted to track and field/cross country associate head coach

John Gondak, who is in his seventh year overseeing the Nittany Lion middle distance athletes, has been promoted to Associate Head Coach for Nittany Lion Track and Field/Cross Country, announced by Director and Head Coach of the Penn State program Beth Alford-Sullivan. Since arriving in Happy Valley, Gondak has coached some of the Nittany Lions' most successful athletes, including former multiple-time Big Ten Champion and All-American Ryan Foster, as well as current standouts senior Casimir Loxsom (New Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Robby Creese (Mount Airy, Md.).

Penn State is fourth in Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings

Another superlative fall sports season has boosted Penn State into fourth place in the latest Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.

The Nittany Lions moved into the Top 5 on the strength of the women's volleyball team's fifth NCAA semifinal or championship match appearance in the past six years and the women's soccer team advancing to the NCAA College Cup championship match. The final Learfield Sports Directors' Cup fall standings will be announced in mid-January.

Trio of former Nittany Lions to play in 2013 NFL Pro Bowl

A trio of former Penn State standouts -- NaVorro Bowman, Tamba Hali and Cameron Wake -- have been selected to the 2013 Pro Bowl. Hali and Wake were named starters for the AFC.

A linebacker with the San Francisco 49ers, Bowman earns his first Pro Bowl berth. A linebacker with the Kansas City Chiefs, Hali was selected to his second consecutive Pro Bowl. A defensive end with the Miami Dolphins, Wake earns his second Pro Bowl berth in the past three seasons.

McGloin, Zordich accept all-star game invitations

Penn State offensive co-captains Matthew McGloin (Scranton) and Michael Zordich (Youngstown, Ohio) have accepted invitations to play in all-star contests. A record-setting quarterback, McGloin has been invited to play in the Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Challenge. Zordich is set to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. They join defensive tackle Jordan Hill (Senior Bowl) as Nittany Lions selected to play in all-star games thus far.

Thirty-one Penn State student-athletes receiving diplomas this weekend

Thirty-one Penn State student-athletes are scheduled to graduate during commencement exercises Saturday, Dec. 22 on the University Park campus. Student-athletes representing 13 Penn State squads are on the approved to graduate list, including 10 members of the football team, four members of the women's swimming and diving squad and three members of the women's soccer and women's track and field teams.

Penn State football coach Bill O'Brien, who earned three national Coach of the Year honors in 2012, will be profiled on HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel. The feature story on O'Brien will debut on Tuesday, May 21 at 10 p.m. ET and re-air several times on HBO and HBO2 through June 8. The program also will be available on HBO On Demand from May 27-June 17.

On the heels of the women's outdoor track and field team earning its fourth Big Ten Championship in the last six years, Penn State athletic programs have won a school-record eight Big Ten titles, including a record seven regular season crowns, during a tremendous 2012-13 athletic season. Also, the Nittany Lions' 13 Big Ten titles is the most in the 2011-13 two-year span, leading all other conference schools.

Curry tabbed Academic All-EIVA

Redshirt-sophomore Connor Curry (Newport Beach, Calif.) earned a spot on the Academic All-EIVA Team. Curry was one of 10 men's volleyball student-athletes from six of the eight member schools to be honored.

Lady Lions named Play 4Kay winner

The Penn State Lady Lions have been recognized as the 2013 Play 4Kay Division I winner for their efforts in the national effort to raise breast cancer awareness and raise funds in the fight against breast cancer. The Play 4Kay initiative is a national fundraising effort is in memory of former North Carolina State University head coach Kay Yow, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and battled the disease until 2009.

Annual CVC Golf Tournament set for May 31

The 17th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Tournament will take place Friday, May 31 at the Penn State Blue and White Golf Courses. It will be the fourth event on Coaches vs. Cancer-Penn State's 2012-13 calendar as the organization nears eclipsing $2 million in total funds raised.

Studevent, Hadlock, Winiarski, Chang, Carrier named 2013 Oswald Award winners

Five Penn State students in their respective areas of leadership have been honored with the 2013 John W. Oswald Award. Gizelle Studevent is the recipient in the field of athletics; John Hadlock, creative/performing arts; Kristin Winiarski, journalism; Rachel Chang, representing scholarship; and Bridgette Carrier, social services. The John W. Oswald Award, established in 1983, annually recognizes graduating seniors who have provided outstanding leadership in at least one of several areas of activity at the University. The award consists of a medallion honoring John W. Oswald, president of the University from 1970 to 1983.

Januskova, Urschel honored with 2013 McCoy Award

Tennis player Petra Januskova and football player John Urschel have been selected as the 2013 recipients of the Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award. The McCoy Award is presented annually to one senior female and one senior male student-athlete who have combined successful athletic participation with academic excellence. The award is named for the longtime dean of Penn State’s College of Physical Education, who also served as the University’s athletic director.
