STATERs encourage Penn Staters to go green and keep campus clean

It's not hard to find members of STATERs -- a new campus-recognized student recycling organization -- in a crowd of thousands who are tailgating at a Penn State football home game. Wearing matching fluorescent green shirts and carrying big blue bags with the universal recycling symbol around a Nittany Lion's head, STATERs are already well known in the grassy fields where football fans congregate.

Student-produced TV show set for national debut Thursday

The first of three episodes of "We Are: The Millennials," the first high-definition TV program produced by students in the College of Communications at Penn State, is scheduled for its national debut at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1, on the Big Ten Network. The first of three episodes of "We Are: The Millennials," which focuses on the interests, stories and themes of college-aged students, represents the culmination of much hard work by students in COMM 497F: "Big Ten Network," taught by Topher Yorks, a senior producer/director at WPSU-TV.

Record crowd of 73,000 turns out for Blue-White Game

A record crowd of 73,000 fans turned out on a beautiful 80-degree day for Penn State's annual Blue-White Game in Beaver Stadium. The Blue captured a 27-14 victory, as quarterbacks Darryl Clark (Youngstown, Ohio) and Pat Devlin (Downingtown) were a combined 13 of 21 for 166 yards and three touchdowns. The game was the highlight of Blue-White Weekend. The estimated crowd of 73,000 broke last year's record of 71,000. More than 40,000 fans have attended the game in 10 of the past 13 years, with rainy conditions during the other three contests.

Big Ten Network to air Blue-White Game

The Big Ten Network plans coverage of eight spring football games being held on April 19, including a live webcast and delayed telecast of Penn State's Blue-White Game. The Blue-White Game will kick at 2 p.m. and will air on the Big Ten Network on Monday, April 21 at 8 p.m. ET. The contest can be heard live on the Penn State Sports Network and GoPSUsports.com, the official website of Penn State Athletics.

Gridiron Bash, Fergie concert postponed by promoters of event

Due to a recent NCAA ruling regarding the participation of student-athletes, MSL Sports & Entertainment announced today that the 2008 Gridiron Bash has been postponed at all venues nationally. Penn State was scheduled to host the Gridiron Bash on Friday, April 18, as part of its Blue White Weekend festivities with a concert by pop star Fergie.

Paterno, Posluszny headline Blue-White Luncheon

Coach Joe Paterno and former Penn State All-America linebacker Paul Posluszny will be the featured speakers at the Nittany Lion Club's Blue-White Luncheon. Paterno and the 2008 senior football squad members are scheduled to attend the luncheon, which will be held on Saturday, April 19, prior to the Blue-White Game. The NLC event will take place in the Bryce Jordan Center. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. and the program begins at 10:30 a.m. Tim Curley, Director of Athletics, and Joe Battista, Executive Director of the Nittany Lion Club also will speak at the event. Head coaches from several Penn State squads also are scheduled to attend the Blue-White festivities.

Vote online to push Penn State to front of $1 million scholarship race

Although most Penn State fans do not have the means of making a seven-figure donation to their beloved Blue and White, they can certainly play a major role in collectively doing just that by voting for the Nittany Lions in the USA TODAY Bash for Cash Series, with the winner among 16 universities adding $1 million to its general scholarship fund. This year's Blue-White Weekend welcomes the Blackberry Gridiron Bash The Ultimate Fan Competition, featuring the first-ever concert inside Beaver Stadium and American Music Award Female Performer of the Year, Fergie, on Friday night, April 18. With 15 other Division I universities hosting similar events in conjunction with their spring football weekends, the Blackberry Gridiron Bash becomes America's biggest music event ever. The winner of the USA TODAY Bash for Cash Series will be determined by total ticket sales to the concert, as well as a combination of online and text votes cast for each school.

Put the Nittany Lion on the cover of NCAA 2009

The 2009 edition of NCAA football will be making its premier on the Nintendo Wii, and the company has decided to let fans decide which school's mascot will be on the cover. Penn State fans have set up a Facebook to encourage people to vote for the Nittany Lion. So far, the group has close to 500 members. Penn State fans are encouraged to vote for the Nittany Lion once a day at http://www.easports.com/ncaa09/ online.

Big Ten Network announces women's basketball analysts

Former Wisconsin coach Mary Murphy, former Indiana assistant coach Vera Jones and former Purdue All-American Stephanie White will serve as the Big Ten Network's lead women's basketball analysts. The announcement was made today by Big Ten Network President Mark Silverman and Executive Producer Leon Schweir. Murphy will regularly handle game analysis on location during the network's Monday primetime telecasts. Jones and White will primarily take part in studio coverage from Big Ten Network headquarters in downtown Chicago. Once conference play begins in January, the Big Ten Network will air a 30-minute pre-game show leading into the Monday night contest. "With 64 women's basketball games on the schedule this season, the Big Ten Network will deliver unprecedented women's basketball coverage. We are proud to put women's sports onto a national stage," Silverman said.

Big Ten Network introduces basketball studio team

Three Big Ten basketball figures who enjoyed tremendous success as a player or coach will serve as Big Ten Network men's basketball analysts this season. The roster includes legendary former Purdue coach Gene Keady; Jimmy Jackson, Ohio State's former two-time Big Ten Player of the Year and 14-year NBA veteran; and former Northwestern star Tim Doyle. Keady, Jackson and Doyle will join Dave Revsine in the Big Ten Network's downtown Chicago studios to anchor the network's doubleheader coverage on most Wednesdays and Saturdays. In addition, the trio will serve as analysts on selected game broadcasts during the season and regularly appear on "Big Ten Tonight."

Service Electric now carrying Big Ten Network

Service Electric Cable TV & Communications, serving more than 100,000 customers in the Lehigh Valley, Pa., and Hunterdon County & Phillipsburg, N.J., areas announced that it has reached agreement to carry the Big Ten Network. The announcement was made Friday (Oct. 5) by Service Electric General Manager Jack Capparell and Big Ten Network President Mark Silverman. In making the announcement, Capparell said that Service Electric believes the network, dedicated to showcasing the nation's premier athletic and academic conference, will be an instant hit with area Penn State fans. "We're really very pleased that our customers are able to get the Big Ten Network," Capparell continued, "and I expect the Big Ten Network to become a popular destination for our customers very, very quickly." The Big Ten Network will appear to expanded basic customers on channel 32.

WideOpenWest launches Big Ten Network

WideOpenWest, the nation's largest alternative cable video services provider and 11th-largest system operator overall, and the Big Ten Network Friday (Sept. 28) announced that WOW will provide Big Ten Network to its expanded basic television customers throughout Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana, in time for this weekend's football games on the network. With the addition of WOW, Big Ten Network has entered into distribution agreements with all of the major alternatives to the largest cable companies enfranchised in these same eight states to service their communities. The agreement boosts Big Ten Network's availability beyond 30 million homes in its first 30 days, making Big Ten Network the only new network in cable or satellite television history to earn that distinction. In fact, no other new cable or satellite network has surpassed 30 million homes in its first year, and only five others have achieved that milestone within their first two years.

State of the University Address on Big Ten Network in October

Penn State President Graham B. Spanier's 2007 State of the University Address will air on the Big Ten Network six times throughout the month of October. For the second year in a row he has turned to a video format for his annual State of the University Address. This visual account of Penn State's accomplishments over the past year contains a heavy focus on energy initiatives, green research, medical breakthroughs and student engagement. Throughout the 23-minute presentation, students and faculty can be seen conducting research that tackles complex environmental challenges such as the creation of biofuels, green-roof research and energy conservation. In addition, Spanier's annual address highlights faculty advances in areas such as molecular biology, materials science and health, displaying only a small portion of Penn State's more than $700 million research enterprise -- the most comprehensive in the country.

RCN launches Big Ten Network

RCN Corporation, a leading provider of video, data and voice services to residential, small business and commercial customers, and the Big Ten Network announced Friday (Sept. 28) night that RCN will provide Big Ten Network to its expanded basic television customers in metropolitan Chicago and in its Pennsylvania markets in time for last Saturday's football action.

A trio of former Penn State football student-athletes have been selected to the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society for the 2012 season. Seniors Mike Farrell (Pittsburgh), Pete Massaro (Newtown Square) and Matt Stankiewitch (Orwigsburg) were selected for the honor. Penn State's three honorees were tied for second-highest among Big Ten Conference institutions.

She will automatically succeed Florida State's Sue Semrau as president in 2015-16 for a two-year term.

Dolik earns USILA Scholar All-America nod

Penn State men's lacrosse senior midfielder Nick Dolik (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) was named a Scholar All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) on Wednesday (May 22) morning. Dolik is the seventh Nittany Lion to achieve the recognition and the second under head coach Jeff Tambroni.

The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team, under the guidance of head coach Cael Sanderson, continued to collect national laurels with the announcement of the NWCA's (National Wrestling Coaches Association) National All-Academic First Team. The 2013 NCAA Champions have four NWCA first team Academic All-Americans as the squad placed in the top 10 in total team GPA.

Two of Penn State's top student-athletes will receive prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships, the Association announced Tuesday (May 21). Gymnast Scott Rosenthal (Clearfield, Pa.) and wrestler Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) were each honored with the award, which carries a $7,500 scholarship for postgraduate study at the university or professional school of the student-athletes choice.

A quartet of Penn State student-athletes earned 2013 Capital One Academic All-District® At-Large selections from College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). On the men's side, wrestler Matt Brown was the lone Penn State honoree, while all three nominated student-athletes from the women's side earned first-team distinction; field hockey forward Kelsey Amy, lacrosse midfielder Tatum Coffey and swimmer Gabi Shishkoff.

Penn State football coach Bill O'Brien, who earned three national Coach of the Year honors in 2012, will be profiled on HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel. The feature story on O'Brien will debut at 10 p.m. ET on Tuesday, May 21, and re-air several times on HBO and HBO2 through June 8. The program also will be available on HBO On Demand May 27-June 17.

On the heels of the women's outdoor track and field team earning its fourth Big Ten Championship in the last six years, Penn State athletic programs have won a school-record eight Big Ten titles, including a record seven regular season crowns, during a tremendous 2012-13 athletic season. Also, the Nittany Lions' 13 Big Ten titles is the most in the 2011-13 two-year span, leading all other conference schools.
