The United Nations has taken notice of the work of Penn State DuBois' own assistant professor of economics Evelyn Wamboye. Officials in the U.N.'s Committee for Development Policy, who work to improve the lives of people living in undeveloped countries, have asked Wamboye to contribute her expertise to their efforts.

Smeal professor to serve as editor-in-chief of new marketing journal

Min Ding, Smeal Professor of Marketing and Innovation in the Penn State Smeal College of Business, is the editor-in-chief of Customer Needs and Solutions, a new journal for scholarly research in the field of marketing. The journal aims to publish high-risk, high payoff work and seeks submissions with high impact while maintaining academic rigor.

U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame adds professor's photographs to permanent collection

Mary Lou Nemanic, associate professor of communications at Penn State Altoona, has had documentary photographs accepted into the permanent collection of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. Taken during the 1980s, the 16-inch by 20-inch, toned silver prints feature former U.S. hockey great John Mariucci. They are a part of a 20-print exhibit of hockey photographs that will be placed on regular display.

O'Toole discusses holistic approach to Web design in new book

Greg O’Toole, a lecturer and senior Web UI engineer at Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), plays a dual role in the college as a Web media technologist and educator. His new book, “Sustainable Web Ecosystem Design” (Springer, 2013), is intended to serve as both a resource for Web professionals and a learning guide for his IST students.

Tapia joins task force to examine social media opportunities for sociologists

Sociology is a highly esteemed field with a massive canon of literature, but according to Dr. Andrea Tapia, an associate professor at Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), many sociologists are not well-versed in using social media to promote their research and activities. As a recently appointed member of the American Sociological Association’s (ASA) new Task Force on Social Media, she will have an opportunity to help other sociologists gain greater exposure by using social media as a publicity and networking tool.

Four at Berks named First-Year Advocates

As part of Penn State Berks’ commitment to helping incoming students make a smooth transition from high school to college, the college has placed a strong emphasis on first-year experience. To that end, each year one member of the Penn State Berks faculty and staff, and one or more members of the student body are named first-year advocates. This year’s honorees are JoAnne Pumariega, instructor in mathematics and Spanish; Karen Del Vecchio, academic adviser; and students Frank Bingham, sophomore kinesiology major, and Chris Brendel, junior communication arts and sciences major.

Art Education faculty, alumnus win prestigious national honors

Penn State’s art education faculty and alumni have long contributed to the outstanding national reputation of the University’s art education program. This year the National Art Education Association (NAEA) recognized the contributions of three Penn Staters by inducting them into its 2013 Class of Distinguished Fellows. The honorees were Karen Keifer-Boyd, professor of art education and women’s studies; B. Stephen Carpenter II (Class of 1989, master of education; Class of 1996, doctorate in art education), professor of art education; and alumnus John Howell White (Class of 1994, doctorate in art education), professor of art education and chair of the Department of Art Education and Crafts at Kutztown University.

Online teaching/learning leader receives Sloan-C Fellow Award

Since 1995, Lawrence C. Ragan has led efforts to integrate new and emerging technologies into a variety of distance learning educational systems at Penn State. As director of faculty development for Penn State's World Campus, Ragan oversees the design and development of professional training systems and services to prepare faculty members teaching online and blended courses. For his contributions, Ragan will be recognized as a Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) Fellow at the 17th annual Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning in Orlando, Fla., in November.
