Environmental Law Institute recognize Penn State wetlands scientist

The Environmental Law Institute has announced that Robert P. Brooks, a wetlands scientist at Penn State, has received the 2013 National Wetlands Award for Science Research. Brooks and six other award recipients were honored at a ceremony at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C., on May 9.

Wanner named Barry Director of Paterno Fellows Program

Catherine Wanner, professor of history, has been appointed to the Rick and Sue Barry Directorship of the Paterno Fellows Program in the College of the Liberal Arts at Penn State, beginning July 1. She will succeed Jack Selzer, who is the founding director of the college’s leadership program and who will return to teaching and research responsibilities as the Paterno Family Professor of Literature. The Paterno Fellows Program is an academic excellence and leadership program for students in the College of the Liberal Arts, and a unique partnership between the college and the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State.

Architecture professor James Wines to receive lifetime achievement award

Penn State professor of architecture James Wines, founder and president of SITE, will be honored this fall with the National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. He is being recognized for his work in design of site-specific structures that engage information about the environment, including buildings, public spaces, environmental art, landscapes, master plans, interiors, video productions, graphics and product designs. His work has attracted international attention since 1970, influencing the design of environmentally oriented buildings, interiors, gardens and public spaces throughout the world.

Two Penn State engineering faculty members were recently named fellows of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The faculty members are Mike Erdman, the Walter L. Robb Director of Engineering Leadership Development, and Soundar Kumara, the Allen E. Pearce/Allen M. Pearce Professor of Industrial Engineering.

Founded in 1876 and headquartered in Chicago, the ALA provides leadership for the development, promotion and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.

Margaret Jaster, associate professor of English and humanities at Penn State Harrisburg, has received The American Shakespeare Center’s 2013 Words in Action Award. Presented annually on Shakespeare’s birthday, the award recognizes teachers from elementary to university levels whose approach to Shakespeare inspires students and personifies Shakespeare’s advice to be “great in act as you have been in thought.”

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has appointed retired Adm. James W. Houck, distinguished scholar in residence at Penn State Law and School of International Affairs, to a Congressionally-mandated panel charged with conducting an independent review of Department of Defense systems used to investigate, prosecute and adjudicate allegations of sexual assault in the military.

Young becomes first Penn State librarian elected president of ALA

Courtney Louise Young, head librarian at the J. Clarence Kelly Library at Penn State Greater Allegheny, has been elected as 2014-15 president of the American Library Association (ALA). Barbara I. Dewey, dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications at Penn State, noted, "Courtney Young is the first Penn State librarian to hold this honor and will bring our University to the table of this policy-making body of the ALA."
