Ivyside Dance Ensemble hits the stage

Penn State Altoona’s Ivyside Dance Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 25 and 26, in the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are $5 for Penn State Altoona students and $7 for general admission. Children younger than 12 are free.

Orchesis, Penn State's oldest dance company, will be hosting its annual Spring Choreographer's Showcase at 8 p.m. Friday, April 12; 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13; and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14; in White Hall Dance Theater, Room 132-133 of the White Building.

Sutie Madison moves a lot. As an artist, director and choreographer, it’s part of her work. As a woman living with Tourette’s Syndrome, it’s part of her life. She will lead a performance at Penn State Abington on April 12 to entertain and to promote tolerance of those living with neurological disorders.

"Mass" -- a theater piece for singers, players and dancers that’s a collaborative venture among Penn State’s School of Music, School of Theatre and Center for the Performing Arts -- comes to Eisenhower Auditorium for performances at 7:30 p.m. April 5 and 2 p.m. April 6. The event is part of the College of Arts and Architecture's celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Two students from Penn State Greater Allegheny danced the night away at Penn State’s THON, raising money to fight pediatric cancer.  The Greater Allegheny campus raised nearly $11,000 towards the THON total of more than $12.3 million.

Lord of the Dance created by Michael Flatley, a mesmerizing blend of traditional and modern Celtic music and dance, returns to Eisenhower Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17. And now, between Feb. 3 and 9, $10 of each Lord of the Dance section-one ticket sold will be donated to the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, better known as THON.

Tickets buyers who want to take advantage of the $10-per-ticket contribution for seats in the orchestra and grand tier levels must use the code word "THON" when purchasing by phone or in person. Online purchasers should use the THON buyer type to apply the $10 donation.

Montreal ballet company juxtaposes two dances in 'Italian Evening'

Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal performs two dances, both choreographed by Italian Mauro Bigonzetti but quite different in style, when the troupe visits Penn State's Eisenhower Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12. "Italian Evening" features The Four Seasons, set to beloved music by Vivaldi, and Cantata, performed to live music sung by Gruppo Musicale Assurd.

"The Four Seasons is preternaturally angular and airy, a balletic-based study of dancers as creatures with [recorded] music by the Venetian-born Antonio Vivaldi," wrote a Boston Globe reviewer. "Cantata is earthy and human, utilizing a hearty, sweaty, barefoot modern-dance vocabulary with live accompaniment by Gruppo Musicale Assurd, an all-female quartet who perform contemporary compositions and traditional music of southern Italy."

August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble highlights Unity Day celebration

A performance by the August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble on Jan. 22, highlights the celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Penn State New Kensington.

The ensemble's "Diversity of Dance" is set for 7:30 p.m., in the Forum Theatre. The Pittsburgh-based company's performance is the grand finale of the daylong "Celebration of Unity" that pays tribute to the legacy of King. The celebration includes a Non-Profit Volunteer Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., panel discussion Hunger, Homelessness and Education from 4:30 to 6 p.m., and a community dinner from 6 to 7:30 p.m. All events are free to the public.

Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca to perform Spanish dance, music

Soledad Barrio, one of the world's most electrifying dancers, stars with her company Noche Flamenca in a Spanish dance and music performance at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26 in Eisenhower Auditorium.

"Her dancing is invariably charged with intense drama -- remarkably so, even by the standards of flamenco, itself an inherently dramatic form," wrote a New York Times critic. "In her stance, her rhythm, the way she addresses the light and the way she opposes head to shoulders, she goes straight for the expressive tension that seems to be at flamenco's very heart."
