Greater Allegheny to launch CPA program in May

A series of one-day sessions will be offered this summer as part of the certified public accounting program at Penn State Greater Allegheny. Participants receive continuing educations credits for the eight-hour courses.

Penn Stater clears educational hurdles, wins adult student award

Growing up in Kansas with religious parents concerned about the morality of public school, Neil Meyer had no real educational structure after the second grade and never completed his homeschooling. When he turned 18, he moved out of his parents’ house and made his way to Pennsylvania. Now a junior majoring in psychology with a neuroscience option, Meyer has been honored with the 2013 Penn State Outstanding Adult Student Award.

Volvo Group addresses students on Preferred Talent Partnership

Representatives of the Volvo Group spoke to a crowd of approximately 150 Penn State students and faculty on Thursday (April 11) during a visit celebrating the Academic Preferred Talent Partnership agreement recently signed between Volvo Group and Penn State. Penn State is one of only eight universities worldwide that Volvo has chosen as a Preferred Talent Partner, and only the second such university in the United States.

For those interested in understanding human behavior, in learning how people relate to one another and about how to make a difference in their lives, Penn State’s new online bachelor of science in human development and family studies (HDFS) offers an excellent opportunity to prepare for a variety of rewarding careers. Offered by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies in the College of Health and Human Development, the HDFS program is delivered online through the World Campus.

The Volvo Group recently signed an Academic Preferred Talent Partnership agreement with Penn State -- one of only eight universities worldwide to have such agreements with Volvo. The three-year program provides Penn State students with co-op, internship and mentoring opportunities and offers talent recruitment benefits to Volvo Group.

Human resources society renews Penn State online master’s degree

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has renewed its designation of Penn State’s online master of professional studies in human resources and employment relations (HRER) degree as a program that meets SHRM’s HR Curriculum Guidelines. SHRM’s renewal indicates that the program is consistent with the content areas specified by SHRM for a graduate HR program. The guidebook and associated templates developed by SHRM are the result of a highly interactive, ongoing process involving practitioner and academic communities. The program will be listed on the SHRM website.

Lauren Kooistra and Andrew Porter, graduate consultants with the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will lead “The Summer Squeeze: Effectively Teaching a Full Course in Just Six Weeks” from 1:45 to 3 p.m. April 10, in Room 315 Rider Building. The workshop will also be offered from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 11, in the same location.

Penn State to invest $20 million to grow World Campus to 45,000 students

Penn State’s online campus, the World Campus, is poised to more than triple students enrolled in online education programs from 12,000 to 45,000 within the next decade. The University is committing $20 million over five years from World Campus revenues toward this new expansion goal. Penn State President Rodney Erickson announced the goal today (April 29) in a letter to the University community.

World Campus military and veteran student enrollment continues to rise

The flexibility of online education is ideal for many adults who want to learn when and where it's convenient to them, and especially beneficial to active-duty military service members deployed in a war zone or where Internet access is limited. Since Penn State's World Campus launched 15 years ago, enrollment by active-duty military service members and veterans has grown steadily -- and more than 120 percent in the last four years.

Nonprofit organization ACES North America was presented with a new marketing campaign recently thanks to some consulting from a Penn State Smeal College of Business student group. Students Consulting for Nonprofit Organizations (SCNO), a group that provides free consulting to local nonprofit organizations, also worked with the Children’s Aid Society and the Child Protection and Safety Collaboration.

Penn State’s online Intercollege MBA (iMBA) takes this educational analysis a step further by involving iMBA students in real-world learning. Pennsylvania’s improving job market is reflected in its unemployment rate, now 7.2 percent in central Pennsylvania, as more companies ramp up hiring. Central Pennsylvania residents who want to learn about job opportunities in this region are invited to attend the sixth annual Central Pennsylvania Regional Career Fair from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 17, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in Innovation Park. More than 65 employers will be at the event.

A married couple in New Jersey, a State College resident and a civilian worker in Afghanistan will all receive degrees earned online through the World Campus during Penn State’s spring commencement May 3–5. Among the Penn State students graduating during University Park campus commencement are Tom Brown, a civilian worker in Afghanistan; Matthew and Diana Kirk of Riverside, N.J.; and Jamie Reep of State College.

Penn State to host international conference on pollinator health

With populations of wild and domesticated pollinators, such as honeybees, in decline, some of the world's foremost scientists in the field will converge on Penn State this summer to discuss the latest research aimed at understanding and overcoming challenges to pollinator health. Hosted by the Center for Pollinator Research in the College of Agricultural Sciences, the second International Conference on Pollinator Biology, Health and Policy will be held August 14 to 17 at The Nittany Lion Inn.
