Chris Staley: 'Outside the Frame: Making the 2012-13 Penn State Laureate Videos'
Ceramicist Chris Staley, the 2012-13 Penn State Laureate and distinguished professor of art at the University, is discussing topics related to creativity and the intersection between art and life in a series of videos to be shared during the 2012-13 academic year, aiming to expand people's ideas on art and serve as a catalyst for further conversation. The 28th video, "Outside the Frame: Making the 2012-13 Penn State Laureate Videos," is now available.
Sustainability pioneer to speak at Penn State on April 22
Majora Carter, urban revitalization strategist, green jobs pioneer and Macarthur “Genius” Award winner, will speak on at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 22, in Room 100 of the Thomas Building. Her talk, titled "Home (town) Security," will be held as part of Penn State's ninth annual Colloquium on the Environment speaker series. The event is free and open to the public.
Penn State's Earth Day celebration to span five days
It’s not just Earth Day this year at Penn State, it’s Earth Days. The multi-day event combines guest speakers, an expo and volunteering opportunities, spanning from April 18 to 22.
Students address environmental issues through service learning
Students in Penn State Berks' Environmental Science course formed teams and conducted research on environmental issues in order to address environmental problems and educate the public as part of their Environmental Awareness and Community Action Projects (EACAP). Student teams will discuss their findings and the actions they took in partnership with various community environmental organizations during the class presentations. There will be two presentations per session on the following dates: April 19, April 22, and April 24, and one presentation per session on April 26. Sessions will be held at 9 and 10 a.m. in room 246 of the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building. The presentations are open to the campus community.
Penn State Behrend helping to make Erie a sustainable community
Both on and off campus, Penn State Behrend students, faculty and staff are working hard to make Erie a more sustainable place to live. Efforts ranging from students participating in the National Energy Challenge and the coordination of their second Trash to Treasure sale, groups and organizations are raising awareness and generating excitement about sustainability.

Middle school students compete in 2nd Annual PA KidWind Challenge
Students from around the state participated in the 2nd Annual PA KidWind challenge held at Londonderry School in Harrisburg, Pa. The event is a chance to get students involved and excited about alternative energy and sustainability. On top of gaining teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills, students learn key scientific concepts during the construction process.
Bell Tower Bash 2013
The Penn State Lion Ambassadors offered students a chance to see campus from atop Old Main today (April 10) as part of the Bell Tower Bash at University Park. Students lined up for a chance to tour the bell tower as the Ambassadors offered food, music and activities on the Old Main patio.
Smeal welcomes TerraCycle CEO as keynote speaker on April 18
Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle and author of Revolution in a Bottle: How TerraCycle is Redefining Green Business, will be a featured speaker during Penn State’s Earth Days. TerraCycle collects trash and turns it into reusable items.
Project site work begins on HUB-Robeson Center lawn
Site work began on the HUB-Robeson Center (HUB) lawn this week in advance of a proposed HUB addition and renovation project. In preparation for the project, work is under way to install temporary units designed to house the Penn State Bookstore from June 2013 to July 2014 while existing space is renovated. Pending Board of Trustees approval, construction will begin in May 2013 and will be complete in May 2015.

New financial literacy program aims to help students better manage debt
Penn State has created a new financial literacy program aimed at helping students make better decisions about budgeting, borrowing and loan repayment. In recognition of National Financial Literacy month in April, the program will kick off with a workshop April 17 called “Budgeting 101: Making Dollars with Sense.”

Jerome K. Pasto, associate dean emeritus in the College of Agricultural Sciences and founder and namesake of the Pasto Agricultural Museum, died March 17 at the age of 97.
Lehigh Valley offers creative and academic summer youth camps
Penn State Lehigh Valley is offering two-week, half-day youth camps from July 8-19. Camps are available in writing, visual arts, math and engineering and are geared toward students entering grades one through twelve. Camps are offered in the morning (9 a.m.-noon) or the afternoon (1-4 p.m.).

Conceptual designs for the Children's Garden at the Arboretum at Penn State
The central theme for the Children’s Garden at the H. O. Smith Botanic Gardens in The Penn State Arboretum is based on central Pennsylvania’s geomorphology and its particular flora, fauna and culture. Ridges and valleys, including Mount Nittany, can be seen from the garden.
Town-gown partnership seeks 'alcohol-free' downtown on State Patty's Day
A town-gown partnership that for more than a decade has been united against high-risk drinking is employing new tactics to keep downtown State College alcohol-free on what has become known as "State Patty's Day."
An agreement has been reached with downtown State College taverns and restaurants to halt the sale of alcohol on Feb. 23, the date set for this year's State Patty’s Day, an event created by students six years ago. Establishments will still offer food and non-alcoholic drinks, maintaining downtown’s appeal for responsible visitors.
Fallen tree causes disruption of traffic flow on Atherton Street
A fallen tree has caused disrupted traffic on Atherton Street between Park Avenue and Curtin Road in State College. Motorists should avoid the area and plan alternate routes; authorities expect the disruption to last for most of the day today (May 16).
Car wars: Alternative vehicle public expo on Saturday, May 18
The 21st Century Automotive Challenge will give visitors a chance to check out vehicles powered by a number of alternative energy sources, including electricity, compressed natural gas and biodiesel. Vehicles will be on display from 10 to 2 on Saturday, May 18, at the MorningStar Solar Home.
Road research center receives environmental quality award
The Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute's Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies at Penn State was selected by the Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Professionals (PAEP) to receive the 2013 Karl Mason Environmental Stewardship Award. The award was presented at the PAEP award banquet on May 9, at the Toftrees Golf Resort and Conference Center in State College, Pa.
GridSTAR Net Zero Energy Demonstration Project under way at The Navy Yard
A powerful collaboration of researchers, manufacturers and economic development officials are embarking on a groundbreaking demonstration project for smart-grid, net zero energy buildings called the GridSTAR Center — a Smart Energy Campus initiative at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia. Spearheaded by Penn State with support from the U.S. Department of Energy, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), the GridSTAR Net Zero Energy Demonstration Structure is the first phase of the GridSTAR Center.

Commission for Women report reviews status of women at Penn State
In the past 10 years, women at Penn State have not made progress or have lost ground in several key areas, according to the Status of Women at Penn State, 2001-11 report, issued by Penn State’s Commission for Women (CFW). This report provides a decade-long trend of growth and declines in the numbers of women trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, technical service employees and students at the University during this period.
