'Senior Sendoff' open to Penn State seniors April 25

Graduation is just around the corner for the Class of 2013, and with it comes the annual Penn State Senior Sendoff, to be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, at the Hintz Family Alumni Center. This is a free event and all seniors are welcome to attend.

Friday signifies the end of the work week for most students, and that means relaxing, laying back and recharging for the next week. Some students though decide to donate the first couple of hours to helping the University get a little bit greener. Each day the Office of Physical Plant is responsible for supplying power to the more than 900 buildings at University Park. During the work week, that amounts to a lot of watts of power, but offices and classrooms need light. The question looms, though, "Do classrooms need light on the weekend when they are empty?"

Erie ROTC battalion wins MacArthur Award

The “Pride of PA” battalion of the U.S. Army ROTC – a unit that includes students from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College – has won a General Douglas MacArthur Award for excellence. The unit outperformed 40 others to earn the honor.

Penn State chosen for DOE's inaugural wind competition

Penn State has been named one of only 10 universities to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) inaugural Collegiate Wind Competition, the agency announced April 11. Over the next year, student teams will be challenged to design and construct a lightweight, transportable wind turbine that can be used to power small electronic devices.

David Wineland, winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics, gave the 2013 Eberly Family Distinguished Lecture in Science on April 11 in the HUB-Robeson Auditorium on the University Park campus. Wineland is known for his research on the world's most accurate atomic clocks. These clocks use ions -- electrically charged atoms -- as a super-accurate way of keeping time. Lehigh Valley offers creative and academic summer youth camps

Penn State Lehigh Valley is offering two-week, half-day youth camps from July 8-19. Camps are available in writing, visual arts, math and engineering and are geared toward students entering grades one through twelve. Camps are offered in the morning (9 a.m.-noon) or the afternoon (1-4 p.m.).

Penn State students have endorsed funding for the second phase of expansion of the Intramural (IM) Building at University Park. The addition supported by the Student Facility Fee Committee includes three basketball courts, extension of the running track on the mezzanine level and conversion of the existing main gym into a multi-activity court.

New process cleanly extracts oil from tar sands and fouled beaches

A new, more environmentally friendly method of separating oil from tar sands has been developed by a team of researchers at Penn State. This method, which utilizes ionic liquids to separate the heavy viscous oil from sand, also is capable of cleaning oil spills from beaches and separating oil from drill cuttings, the solid particles that must be removed from drilling fluids in oil and gas wells. Town-gown partnership seeks 'alcohol-free' downtown on State Patty's Day

A town-gown partnership that for more than a decade has been united against high-risk drinking is employing new tactics to keep downtown State College alcohol-free on what has become known as "State Patty's Day."

An agreement has been reached with downtown State College taverns and restaurants to halt the sale of alcohol on Feb. 23, the date set for this year's State Patty’s Day, an event created by students six years ago. Establishments will still offer food and non-alcoholic drinks, maintaining downtown’s appeal for responsible visitors.

New minor in sustainability delivers green education

A new minor available to all Penn State DuBois bachelor’s degree students will provide them with the tools to be a champion for the environment, while also making them more appealing to future employers. The minor in sustainability leadership allows students in any four-year major to incorporate sustainability as a significant theme in their undergraduate degree program. Through a combination of coursework and immersive experiences in sustainability, students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to become sustainability leaders in their respective fields.

A fallen tree has caused disrupted traffic on Atherton Street between Park Avenue and Curtin Road in State College. Motorists should avoid the area and plan alternate routes; authorities expect the disruption to last for most of the day today (May 16).

Road research center receives environmental quality award

The Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute's Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies at Penn State was selected by the Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Professionals (PAEP) to receive the 2013 Karl Mason Environmental Stewardship Award. The award was presented at the PAEP award banquet on May 9, at the Toftrees Golf Resort and Conference Center in State College, Pa.
