Penn State forms Joint Diversity Awareness Task Force

Penn State has named a diverse group of students, faculty and administrators to a recently formed Joint Diversity Awareness Task Force, which will work collaboratively to provide recommendations to the University Faculty Senate and Penn State’s administration to increase diversity awareness in the University community.

That message followed reports from students, who said that threatening statements had been heard suggesting that this unidentified black male and his companion might take action to harm people.

Changing the way a plant forms cellulose may lead to more efficient, less expensive biofuel production, according to Penn State engineers. "What every biofuel manufacturer wants to do is to get to the sugars," said Jeffrey Catchmark, associate professor of agricultural and biological engineering. "But the structure of cellulose itself can be an obstacle."

Beginning May 13, Penn State's Nittany Lion Shrine will be closed to visitors this summer for renovations to improve lighting, accessibility and landscaping. Depending on many variables that can impact the progress of the work, including weather, there may be limited access from between summer commencement and Sept. 6, the target completion date of the project.

Penn State Lehigh Valley is offering two-week, half-day youth camps from July 8-19. Camps are available in writing, visual arts, math and engineering and are geared toward students entering grades one through twelve. Camps are offered in the morning (9 a.m.-noon) or the afternoon (1-4 p.m.).

New process cleanly extracts oil from tar sands and fouled beaches

A new, more environmentally friendly method of separating oil from tar sands has been developed by a team of researchers at Penn State. This method, which utilizes ionic liquids to separate the heavy viscous oil from sand, also is capable of cleaning oil spills from beaches and separating oil from drill cuttings, the solid particles that must be removed from drilling fluids in oil and gas wells. Town-gown partnership seeks 'alcohol-free' downtown on State Patty's Day

A town-gown partnership that for more than a decade has been united against high-risk drinking is employing new tactics to keep downtown State College alcohol-free on what has become known as "State Patty's Day."

An agreement has been reached with downtown State College taverns and restaurants to halt the sale of alcohol on Feb. 23, the date set for this year's State Patty’s Day, an event created by students six years ago. Establishments will still offer food and non-alcoholic drinks, maintaining downtown’s appeal for responsible visitors.

New minor in sustainability delivers green education

A new minor available to all Penn State DuBois bachelor’s degree students will provide them with the tools to be a champion for the environment, while also making them more appealing to future employers. The minor in sustainability leadership allows students in any four-year major to incorporate sustainability as a significant theme in their undergraduate degree program. Through a combination of coursework and immersive experiences in sustainability, students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to become sustainability leaders in their respective fields.

A fallen tree has caused disrupted traffic on Atherton Street between Park Avenue and Curtin Road in State College. Motorists should avoid the area and plan alternate routes; authorities expect the disruption to last for most of the day today (May 16).

The Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute's Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies at Penn State was selected by the Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Professionals (PAEP) to receive the 2013 Karl Mason Environmental Stewardship Award. The award was presented at the PAEP award banquet on May 9, at the Toftrees Golf Resort and Conference Center in State College, Pa.

A powerful collaboration of researchers, manufacturers and economic development officials are embarking on a groundbreaking demonstration project for smart-grid, net zero energy buildings called the GridSTAR Center — a Smart Energy Campus initiative at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia. Spearheaded by Penn State with support from the U.S. Department of Energy, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), the GridSTAR Net Zero Energy Demonstration Structure is the first phase of the GridSTAR Center.

In the past 10 years, women at Penn State have not made progress or have lost ground in several key areas, according to the Status of Women at Penn State, 2001-11 report, issued by Penn State’s Commission for Women (CFW). This report provides a decade-long trend of growth and declines in the numbers of women trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, technical service employees and students at the University during this period.
