Campers develop skills at Penn State’s youth summer camps

New this year, the School of Visual Arts Summer Art Camp (July 7 to 12) will teach high school students who are interested in the visual arts how to create a portfolio of their work. The camp’s theme, “Portfolio Processes,” underscores the goals of the program – to show campers how to create exciting artworks in different media and to develop a digital portfolio. The camp coincides with the 2013 Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.

Gallery exhibit 'Techno-LOVE' begins May 30

The Gallery at Penn State Lehigh Valley will host a new exhibition, "Techno-LOVE," from May 30 to June 27. An opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. June 4. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Twenty-four area artists will show their work as part of the Lycoming County Juried Art Exhibition – titled “Art Alive!” – May 30 to June 28, at The Gallery at Penn College. The gallery is on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Madigan Library.

Penn State Great Valley’s Henry Gallery will feature posters from the Historic Yellow Springs as interpreted by local artists. Each poster depicts the history, arts, education and environment of this eclectic community. This exhibit will run through June 21.

Students raise environmental consciousness with Borland photography exhibit

"Developing Environmental Consciousness," an exhibition featuring photos by Penn State students in the Photography and the Environment course, will be on display April 29 to May 3 in the Borland Gallery. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. A reception will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 29.

--Artist Beverly McIver, Suntrust Endowed Chair Professor of Art at North Carolina Central University, speaking on April 19 about her lifelong journey as an artist and the challenges she faced with feeling worthy of her artistic success. McIver's intensely personal paintings examine racial, gender, social and occupational identities.

McIver was the ninth and final speaker in the 2012-13 Penn State Speaker Forum Series, held at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel at University Park.

Penn State Laureate Chris Staley: 'The Gift of Listening'

Ceramicist Chris Staley, the 2012-13 Penn State Laureate and distinguished professor of art at the University, discussed topics related to creativity and the intersection between art and life in a series of weekly videos shared during the 2012-13 academic year, aiming to expand people's ideas on art and serve as a catalyst for further conversation. Locations ranged from Staley's studio to horse stables to a football field, and included interviews with Penn State sports coaches and other distinguished members of the University community. The three- to four-minute videos were co-produced by College of Arts and Architecture staff member Cody Goddard.
