This past summer, a group of 38 students and faculty from Penn State and Jiagnan University journeyed to Lake Taihu in Wuxi, China, as part of a united research effort to study the country's third largest freshwater lake. The experience was part of a course co-taught by Rachel Brennan, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at University Park, and Jacqueline McLaughlin, associate professor of biology at Penn State Lehigh Valley.

The first demonstration of a renewable method for hydrogen production from wastewater using a microbial electrolysis system is under way at the Napa Wine Company in Oakville. The refrigerator-sized hydrogen generator will take winery wastewater, and using bacteria and a small amount of electrical energy, convert the organic material into hydrogen, according to a Penn State environmental engineer.

Converting waste water into energy has earned Bruce Logan, Kappe professor of environmental engineering, Penn State, the 2009 National Water Research Institute's Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize for excellence in water research.
The prize was established in 1993 to recognize outstanding research scientists who have demonstrated excellence in water-science research and technology. The prize includes a medallion and $50,000 and is awarded annually. Logan is the 16th recipient.

About 1,000 women and men live at McMurdo Research Station during the Antarctic summer. Because shipping things in and out of Antarctica is so expensive, they closely monitor their trash: what can be recycled and what cannot, and how to reduce the total amount. McMurdo residents recycle 61 percent of their solid waste.
