Accounting students preparing tax returns for local families

Accounting students in the Penn State Smeal College of Business begin work today as greeters and tax preparers for the Penn State Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

VITA is a nationwide, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sponsored program that provides free tax preparation to low income, special needs and senior citizen taxpayers. Each year many students at Penn State volunteer their time to assist in tax preparation for members of the local community. This year, 38 of the 52 volunteers are Smeal accounting students.

Penn State Law students are offering free tax preparation services to people with low and fixed incomes, people who have disabilities or special needs, and senior citizens aged 60 or older.

Tax assistance is offered to qualified residents of Carlisle and surrounding communities through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program sponsored by the IRS. All student volunteers are certified by the IRS and are trained to identify taxpayer eligibility for certain tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Dependent Care Credit, and Credit for the Elderly.

Penn State-VITA tax prep program assists low-income families

The annual ordeal of tax season brings hair pulling and teeth gnashing for many, but it's especially grueling for low-income families who fear a big tax bill while wondering if they're missing out on a refund. Those families can get free tax-preparation assistance through a special program run by Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. Penn State Cooperative Extension offices in six counties around the state again are sponsoring the U.S. Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to prepare federal tax returns for moderate- to low-income families, special-needs individuals and senior citizens. Volunteers and extension staff assist filers with the entire process, from gathering information to submitting the actual state and federal tax returns.
