Sophomore dancing in THON to celebrate brother's victory over cancer

Penn State sophomore Maddie Sherlock was a freshman in high school when her brother Carl, then 20 and a Penn State student, got sick. A trip to the emergency room of Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College turned into a helicopter trip to the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where ultimately he was diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor. "Why he got a pediatric tumor at the age of 20 no one knows, but it does happen and it did to our family," said Susie Sherlock about her son's diagnosis. She also said, "THON is a wonderful thing, and Four Diamonds is a wonderful thing. We feel very fortunate that the night they life-flighted Carl from Mount Nittany they sent him to Hershey."

York dancers get ready to put on their dancin' shoes For The Kids

Eating their vegetables, working out, getting sleep, and cutting down on caffeine and sugar are just a few things Penn State York students Kaitlyn Dunbar, 19, and Joe Weaver, 18, are doing as they get ready to head to University Park to represent the campus in the 40th Annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), "Brighten Every Journey," set for Feb. 17 - 19 at the Bryce Jordan Center (BJC).

The two dancers were chosen to represent Penn State York based on a variety of criteria including spirit points they earned since September by doing a variety of activities to raise funds for THON. THON, as the dance marathon is affectionately known, is the largest student-run philanthropy in the country and its goal is to raise money to help fight pediatric cancer.

In addition to raising money, through THON, the campus sponsors the Hagens family. Ava Hagens, a 4-year-old from York, Pa., was diagnosed on July 24, 2009, with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Since that time she has undergone a variety of treatments and recently completed her chemotherapy and is in remission. This is her third trip to THON along with her parents Jessica and Greg.

Smeal's leadership speaker series to host THON chair

For the first time since its inception in 2007, the executive speaker series at the Penn State Smeal College of Business, Leadership in Focus: Executive Insights, will host a current Penn State student as a featured speaker. Elaine Tanella, overall chair of the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, will be the college's guest speaker on Feb 24.

Tanella, a senior Schreyer Scholar majoring in bioengineering with a minor in Italian, will join Smeal Dean James B. Thomas for an interactive on-stage conversation at 11:15 a.m. in the Business Building's Struthers Auditorium (110 BB) on the University Park campus. The talk is free and open to the public.

Beaver campus students will dance in THON

Two Penn State Beaver students will dance in Penn State's upcoming 46-hour Dance Marathon, known as THON, Feb. 17-19 at the Bryce Jordan Center, Penn State University Park. Freshman Angelique Matthews, Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS), is from Cypress, Calif., and JJ (James) Figas of Beaver is a sophomore in the DUS program.

Prior to the event, Beaver students are soliciting support from the campus and community, and will continue canning at approved locations this weekend and next.In addition, Beaver students will host a Blood Drive for THON, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Lodge of the Student Union Building. The public is invited to register to give blood, but walk-in appointments will also be accepted.

Penn State Schuylkill raises more than $22,000 for this year's THON

This year, Penn State Schuylkill students have raised more than $22,000 for THON, the largest amount raised in campus history. THON, believed to be the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, is a University-wide effort and has raised more than $78 million to fight pediatric cancer since 1973. This year, two students: Vincent Carrano of Pottsville, Pa., and Derek Stufflet, of Philadelphia, have been selected to represent Schuylkill campus at the 46-hour dance marathon, to be held on the weekend of Feb. 17 at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pa.

Pasta dinner Feb. 4 to support THON

Penn State York's THON Committee is inviting the community to "mangia" (that's Italian for "eat") at a pasta dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, to benefit the 40th annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, lovingly known as THON. The event will take place at the Madison Avenue Church of the Brethren, 646 Madison Avenue, York, Pa. Proceeds go to the campus THON committee's effort to raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. The Four Diamonds Fund helps children with cancer and their families. The York THON group raised about $300 during a similar event in December.

Last weekend for THON canning at New Kensington campus

Students at Penn State New Kensington are making their final fundraising push this weekend to benefit the Penn State Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, also known as THON.

Campus students will be canning Friday, Feb. 3 to Sunday, Feb. 5, at Walmart in Pittsburgh Mills, Golden Corral in Robinson Township, Shop 'N Save on Route 286 in Holiday Park, and Community Market franchises in Lower Burrell and Penn Hills, to raise money for what is believed to be the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. The proceeds go to research of children's cancer.

Penn State DuBois faculty member puts beard, hair on the line for THON

For those who haven't taken his classes, mathematics instructor John Tolle is known around the Penn State DuBois Campus as "the guy with the beard." The beard hangs well below his chest, matched by the long hair on his head, usually worn in a ponytail.

Now, after years of letting it all grow out, Tolle has agreed to put all of his hair on the line in support of THON, the Penn State dance marathon that benefits pediatric cancer research. He has volunteered to participate in the annual THON Hair Auction at Penn State DuBois. Those who attend the auction can place bids for the opportunity to cut the hair of those who volunteer. Knowing his beard and locks would could bring big money, Tolle offered them up, under the agreement that $1,000 must be raised before he goes under the shears.

That's how "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest would introduce Joe Mandak, Erin Prager, Andrew Holodnik and Kelsie Nury, this year's campus representatives at the annual Penn State Interfraternity Council/ Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately known as THON.

THON cancels third canning weekend because of poor weather conditions

After lengthy consultations with senior-level meteorologists who have experience forecasting weather in locations frequently traveled to by THON volunteers for canister solicitation (referred to often as "canning"), THON has chosen to cancel the third canister solicitation weekend. There are reports of significant icing across these regions Friday night into Saturday afternoon, which presents dangerous conditions for travel as well as canister solicitation.

THON initiates canning workshops emphasizing students' personal safety

As of Monday (Jan. 16), Penn State's Dance Marathon (THON) is conducting mandatory "canning workshops" for all Penn State student volunteers who wish to participate in canister solicitation, also known as "canning." These workshops will continue in future years to educate students about personal and travel safety, THON guidelines and policies, general courtesy and safe, legal canning practices while they are off campus raising funds to fight pediatric cancer. The workshops are being held "in an effort to ensure complete understanding of the policies and guidelines for canning," and will review "safe canning practices, travel safety guidelines, general courtesy and THON information," according to a notice to THON volunteers, posted at http://thon.org/students/THONCanningWorkshops online.

As THON nears, students to hold talent show and can for donations

With THON Weekend 2012 just over a month away, the Penn State Lehigh Valley THON team is sponsoring their annual talent show and preparing for another canning weekend.

At 6 p.m. on Jan. 18, in room 135, the team will sponsor the Penn State LV's Got Talent show. The admission price of $5 in advance or $7 at the door will benefit THON. Tickets can be picked up in advance in room 214, Student Affairs.

Student events are under way to raise funds for THON

This week Penn State Beaver students will continue fundraising efforts for Penn State THON -- an annual, two-day dance marathon -- that will be held Feb. 17-19 at the Bryce Jordan Center, Penn State University Park. Beaver students are soliciting support from the campus community and will be canning during the upcoming weekends. In addition, Beaver students will host a Blood Drive for THON, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16 in the Lodge of the Student Union Building. York THON Committee plans blood drive for Jan. 30

Penn State York's THON Committee is partnering with the American Red Cross for a THON Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, in the conference center of the Main Classroom Building at Penn State York. The event is open to the public.

The American Red Cross will make a donation to THON for each unit donated. Proceeds go to the campus THON committee's effort to raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. The Four Diamonds Fund helps children with cancer and their families.

Penn State York dancers Jimmy Clark, 19, of Red Lion, Pa., and Kara Smith, 22, of York, Pa., danced two nights away and completed the 46-hour annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), Feb. 15 to 17, at the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State's University Park campus. THON raised a record-breaking $12,374,034.46 for the Four Diamonds Fund, topping the $10.6 million raised in 2012. Money raised through THON is used to help children with cancer at the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Penn State York broke its own record by raising $22,550.53 and shattered the previous campus record of $17,160.71.

The Penn State Fayette THON team — a group of 55 Fayette students — raised a campus-record $93,173.48 for THON 2013. This year, THON teams across Penn State campuses raised a combined $12,374,034.46 in an effort to fight pediatric cancer, topping last year’s record $10.6 million.

Penn State Altoona surpasses $100,000 THON goal

Penn State students have more than 12 million reasons to celebrate this week as their fundraising efforts to fight pediatric cancer have paid off in a big way. A record total of $12,374,034.46 was revealed during the Feb. 17 culmination of THON, the 46-hour no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon. Penn State Altoona was responsible for more than $100,000 of that, breaking its own goal, being the first commonwealth campus ever to raise that sum, and raising the most of all the commonwealth campuses.

In a game that came down to the final seconds, Penn State (8-16, 0-12 Big Ten) missed on two late opportunities to tie or take the lead and suffered a 74-72 setback to Iowa (16-9, 5-7 Big Ten) Thursday (Feb. 14) night before a raucous student crowd of 1,420 at the Bryce Jordan Center. Penn State coach Patrick Chambers will donate $14,200 to Penn State Dance Marathon 2013, fulfilling his pledge to donate $10 for every Penn State student who attended the contest on the eve of the 46-hour THON event, which kicks off Friday.

Penn State (8-15; 0-11 Big Ten) will face Iowa (15-9; 4-7 Big Ten) on the Thursday night in the Bryce Jordan Center on the eve of Penn State Dance Marathon. Nittany Lion coach Patrick Chambers has pledged to donate $10 to THON 2013 for every Penn State student that attends the 9 p.m. tip on ESPNU. It will also be Dollar Dog Night at the Jordan Center.
