Penn State York participates in record-breaking THON

Penn State York dancers Kaitlyn Dunbar, 19, of York, Pa., and Joe Weaver, 18, of York, Pa., danced two nights away and completed the 46-hour 40th annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), Feb. 17 - 19, in the Bryce Jordan Center at the University Park campus. THON raised a record-breaking $10,686,924.83 for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital, surpassing last year's record $9.56 million. York raised $10,638.61 which contributed to the total to help in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Throughout the weekend themed "Brighten Every Journey," members of the York THON Committee encouraged the dancers along with thousands of others and York's THON family, the Hagens.

Penn State Abington's THONers may still be nursing sore feet from the 46-hour Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, but they also are still celebrating their role in a record year of fundraising for pediatric cancer patients.Abington THON raised $41,695.96, nearly $19,000 more than its previous record in 2011.

A freshman who lost her life on a fundraising trip for the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON) is being celebrated with an endowment intended to help keep other students safe. The Courtney O'Bryan Memorial Fund was officially established on Saturday, Feb. 18, in a signing ceremony at the University's Bryce Jordan Center, where the annual THON event was on its way to securing almost $10.7 million for the fight against pediatric cancer.

The Penn State Fayette THON team--a group of about 60 Fayette students--raised $87,942.22 for THON 2012. This year, THON teams across Penn State University campuses raised a combined total of $10,686,924.83 in an effort to fight pediatric cancer, topping last year's record $9.5 million.

Drum roll, please ... and the total is ... $10,686,924.83! This was yet another record-breaking year in fundraising for THON, the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, with almost $10.7 million raised by many dedicated Penn State students. The total represents a 12 percent increase over last year's nearly $9.6 million record. Going back as far as 2005, THON has continually set and broken its annual fundraising records.

New Kensington raises $50K for THON; second-best in campus history

The THON committee at Penn State New Kensington, headed by junior Lauren Richards, raised $50,467 for the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON) that benefits the Four Diamonds Fund and the fight against pediatric cancer.

The total is the second best in campus history, topped only by $52,392 that was collected last year. The four New Kensington campus student dancers -- Joe Mandak, Erin Prager, Andrew Holodnik and Kelsie Nury -- joined more than 700 dancers from across the University, and stayed on their feet for the entire 46-hour event.

Local THON team smashes fundraising record

During the weekend of Feb. 17-20, two Lehigh Valley students joined hundreds of other Penn State students in a 46-hour, no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon, affectionately known as THON, to raise money for the fight against pediatric cancer. Through their year-long efforts, the Penn State Lehigh Valley team smashed the 2011 campus total, which was just over $24,000, by raising more than $31,000. In total, THON raised more than $10.68 million for the Four Diamonds Fund, beating the 2011 total of more than $9 million.

Penn State Altoona raises large sum for THON, is second among campuses

Penn State Altoona was out in full force at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus for the 40th annual IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON). Altoona campus contributed nearly $83,000 to the record-breaking $10.68 million total, coming in second among all commonwealth campuses.

The 46-hour Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON) once again has set a new record, raising $10,686,924.83 for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital, surpassing last year's record $9.56 million. Funds raised by THON go to support the Four Diamonds Fund and its pediatric cancer patients, families and researchers at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital who are working to find better treatments and, ultimately, cures for forms of cancer that afflict children. First held in 1973, THON has partnered with Four Diamonds Fund since 1977 and in that time has raised more than $89 million FTK -- "For The Kids."

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Mick Jagger and David Bowie danced in the streets for a video for Live Aid to help raise money to defeat famine in Ethiopia. Penn State New Kensington students Joe Mandak, Erin Prager, Andrew Holodnik and Kelsie Nury will be dancing live in the Bryce Jordan Center for THON to help raise money to defeat pediatric cancer in the world.

The New Kensington dancers will join more than 700 Penn State students from all the campuses at the Jordan Center during the 46-hour, no sitting, no sleeping marathon. All monies raised through the dance marathon directly benefit the Four Diamonds Fund at the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.

For bioengineering senior Tanella, it's a marathon to make THON happen

When Penn State student Elaine Tanella heads to campus, she knows that she is going to have a busy day; not because of a heavy course load, but because she runs the largest student-run philanthropy in the world: the Penn State Dance Marathon, commonly known as THON. A fifth-year bioengineering senior, she serves as the 2012 THON overall chairwoman, a year-long position which includes responsibilities such as outlining goals and new ideas for this weekend's upcoming dance marathon (Feb. 17-19), as well as overseeing more than 15,000 volunteers who make THON happen.

Mathematics instructor's hair and beard raises $1,600 for THON

There's a face that is being seen around campus at Penn State DuBois for the first time. It's that of Mathematics Instructor John Tolle. Though he has taught on campus for a few years now, this is the first time anyone here has seen the face under the beard. Tolle volunteered to have his hair and beard auctioned off in support of THON during the annual Hair Auction, organized by the DuBois THON Committee. He raised more than $1,600 for the cause, which supports pediatric cancer research.

Penn State York dancers Jimmy Clark, 19, of Red Lion, Pa., and Kara Smith, 22, of York, Pa., danced two nights away and completed the 46-hour annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), Feb. 15 to 17, at the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State's University Park campus. THON raised a record-breaking $12,374,034.46 for the Four Diamonds Fund, topping the $10.6 million raised in 2012. Money raised through THON is used to help children with cancer at the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Penn State York broke its own record by raising $22,550.53 and shattered the previous campus record of $17,160.71.

Penn State Altoona surpasses $100,000 THON goal

Penn State students have more than 12 million reasons to celebrate this week as their fundraising efforts to fight pediatric cancer have paid off in a big way. A record total of $12,374,034.46 was revealed during the Feb. 17 culmination of THON, the 46-hour no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon. Penn State Altoona was responsible for more than $100,000 of that, breaking its own goal, being the first commonwealth campus ever to raise that sum, and raising the most of all the commonwealth campuses.

Penn State University Police, Bryce Jordan Center and THON staff have announced that the BJC has reached capacity this morning (Feb. 17) for the last day of THON. In a game that came down to the final seconds, Penn State (8-16, 0-12 Big Ten) missed on two late opportunities to tie or take the lead and suffered a 74-72 setback to Iowa (16-9, 5-7 Big Ten) Thursday (Feb. 14) night before a raucous student crowd of 1,420 at the Bryce Jordan Center. Penn State coach Patrick Chambers will donate $14,200 to Penn State Dance Marathon 2013, fulfilling his pledge to donate $10 for every Penn State student who attended the contest on the eve of the 46-hour THON event, which kicks off Friday.

Penn State (8-15; 0-11 Big Ten) will face Iowa (15-9; 4-7 Big Ten) on the Thursday night in the Bryce Jordan Center on the eve of Penn State Dance Marathon. Nittany Lion coach Patrick Chambers has pledged to donate $10 to THON 2013 for every Penn State student that attends the 9 p.m. tip on ESPNU. It will also be Dollar Dog Night at the Jordan Center.
